Looking at both these as possibles for my Sako Forester 243. I need a light weight , fairly small scope for deer hunting mostly under 100 yards,200 max.I may not really need it but for some reason I hate to go under 4X. I realize the fixed is lighter but I might need the mounting length of the variable. Is there much difference optically? Maby the fixed is a little tougher.I would like your opinions.

Modern variable scopes are in almost all cases as rugged and reliable as fixed power scopes now, especially scopes with a smaller objective bell diameter as the 4X Leupold has.  The 2-3/4X powered scope used to be very popular years ago when scopes were not a bright optically as they are now.  A 4X scope will give you a field of view of 24 feet at 100 yards.  Plus you can shoot with both eyes open for running shots with modern scopes.  This will help you find the target faster.  Weightwise, the variable will not be much heavier than the fixed 4X scope.

I've got an older Leupy Vari-X III 1.75-6x32 on a Ruger .44 Carbine.  It is used in fairly thick woods.  Being able to go down to the lower power can sometimes be useful when trying to find moving game in thick brush.  Personally I'd look real hard at the Vortex Viper 2-7x32.  Especially for the type hunting you describe.
