Any opinons on the 3-9x50mm Leupold European scopes? Are these a very bright scope that is good for dusk hunting? Hows the clarity on these scopes...THANKS

50mm divided by 9 power gives a 5.5 mm exit eye pupil.

42mm divided by 6 power gives a 7mm exit eye pupil   ---  that is as bright as is useable.

The glass in Leupold European scopes is somewhere between VX-1 and VX-2 in quality.  Considering the prices Leupold charging for the European line scopes, they are an absolute ripoff.

What is your budget and the intended application?

Well I only have  all Leupolds & two  old redfields on my weapons.  I pretty much have all Leupold VXIIIs, three VXIIs, and three Mark4 M3 scopes. I really like Leupold products- but if your saying these Euros are  a ripooff- I'm steering clear!

These are basically 1" internals, put into 30mm tubes with single-layer coatings throughout and Multicoat 4 on outer lens surfaces.  Then they slap a "European" label on it and charge more money.

I am pretty certain.  Leupold European-30 riflescopes use the same internals as pre-2004 VX-II scopes: Multicoat 4 on the two outer surfaces and Magnesium Fluoride on all inner surfaces.  Unless Leupold redesigned this line of scopes within the last few months without telling anyone that is what they are.

The only other difference is that they use a fast-focus eyepiece (I think).

You are correct, I apologize. I just got off the phone with LEUPOLD Tech support & she confirmed that the Euro scopes have 1inch internals. When I asked "Why..she said it was for "Looks & to help grab the euro market". I also asked her what her  brightest "Low Light hunting scope " was & she told me the VX7 or VXIII series would be the best.

Did you think I was lying?  I would not post it if I did not have a high degree of confidence in the accuracy of my statement.

I will never consider buying another Leupold considering what that lady told you DOGMAN. I have owned one VariX-III but since I discovered Zeiss I have never wanted another Leupold anyway.

While I am not a big fan of Leupold, I do not think you should discard their products so easily.  All companies are involved in marketing exercises to varying degrees.  Leupold makes decent scopes and they offer a bewildering number of configurations.  While they would seldom be my top choice, for some applications a Leupold scope may be the only choice.

Poor Koshkin -- dont feel bad, he didnt believe me either.

Now didn't I say  BurrisEuro, Bushnell4200, NikonMonarch, ZeissConquest - The glass on all of these is probably better -- PS ( the winner is Zeiss with Bushnell 4200 comming in so close behind that the human eye probably cant tell the difference.)

Oh -and by the way, Koshkin probably has forgotten more about optics than most of us will ever know!!!!

Oh come on!  I was beginning to feel insulted, revel in my misery and generally enjoy my victimhood.  Alas, I have to stop now and find some other entertainment.

On a more serious note, are you looking for a scope for a specific rifle/application?

He's looking for a hunting scope in the 3-9 range or so that is very bright late in the evening.

Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 (~$260) and Sightron S2 3-9x42 (~$200) are pretty much the best glass you can get under $300.

Mueller 3.5-10x44 Tac II for ~$260 is up there also.
