I am mounting a scope using Leupold Dual Dovetail base and rings.

When I put the ring into the base and turn it, however, it does not lock into place, but rather keeps turning.

Shouldn't it lock into place?

Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks.

If you have new rings and bases then I would make sure they are not faulty.

I do know that if you re-use these bases and rings you wear out the metal and the tolerances will become so out of spec that they will not work.

It is not recommended to re-use these because once you turn that ring in the base the metal is mated together. Attempting to use the rings on a different base will cause them to not lock down correctly due to the tolerances being off.

Does it take force to spin them all the way around or do they spin freely?

They are new - and they do not spin freely at all - takes a lot of force to turn them - they just do not stop

I talked to someone at Leupold who said to try swapping the 2 rings - any thoughts on that or other ideas?

dovetails do not have locks or stops on them and for a very good reason. the stops may still not line up the scope correctly. This is usually done with a rod alignment tool you can get from somewhere like  Brownells.
I do not agree that dovetails can only be used once or that they will loose there tolerences, have used the same set repeatedly on many rifle and scope combinations. If anything they "wear in". If they get to a point where thay can be "wiggled" it may be a problem, but it ain't gonna happen with leupolds. The front ring take most of the recoil (G's) and thats why a normal set of dovetails only as the front one done. For paranoid people, like yourself they make double dovetails. Unless there is materials defect you will see problems with the screws holding in the base long time before the rings.

Thanks. So you are saying that they are not supposed to stop or lock at all so they can be aligned?

No, they do not lock in. You have to align them and Dale is correct it would take a great deal of use before the rings will start to wiggle freely. However I have seen it a few times before. You should have to put a little effort into moving them but they will not stop on their own.
