I have a pair of Leupold GR 10X42 HD binoculars that were having a problem with the focus knob being a little sloppy. I sent them in for repair and was told today that they are unable to repair them and wish to send me an alternate pair.
I was told they have nothing that is HD and no new Gold Ring Binos. They want to send me some GR 10-17X42 switch binoculars. What are your thoughts?

I wouldn't own a switchpower if they gave one to me. You will need a tripod to use the 17x, and the 10x on the SP is nowhere near as good as the GR HD. I'd tell them you want a new GR HD when they come out if you can wait that long. Nothing they currently make now compares.

I pretty much agree with JGR about the 10-17x Switch power. They are OK at 10x but narrower in fov than the Gold Ring and not of the same optical quality of the GR.
I am a tad bit suspicious that a simple loosened up focus knob is something they can't repair, but it may be that the threads on the geared rod the knob runs are shot. I had that happen with a Swift Eaglet 7x36 and a new rod was needed. I would think Leupold had the machinging capacity to make one if that is the problem.
If Leupold can't fix it than I'd look at some repair sources and see what some of them say. For starters I'd call somebody at SWFA, explain the problem and see what suggestions they have. I bet they have gotten in some used binoculars on their trade in program that needed some TLC before they could be sold.
I'm not wanting to get afoul of posting SWFA competitors so I'd both call SWFA and fire up Google and do a search. I'd be pretty amazed that there is really something unfixable there.
If you really want to fire them up ask for a replacement with a ZEN Prime HD . They are in a bit of a fix because the new Gold Ring stuff won't show up until around the next SHOT show. You could tell them the Switch Power is OK only as a temporary fix until the new Gold Ring stuff comes out. I would also try real hard NOT to let them keep theo binocular you sent them too. I'm getting the run around from Leupold! Now as of Monday the found a new set of 8x42 GR HD binocs.
which is odd because they told me they had "No" HD stuff in. They also found a "blemished" pair of 10X42 GR HD's that "weren't pretty" that they could send. The ones I sent in are like new. I always keep them in a case. I suggested they take the focus assembly out of the blemished pair and put it in mine. He said he'd check on that and get back to me. I haven't hear anything yet so I called today, Wednesday and talked to someone who said he'll need to get to the bottom of this and call back. I am loosing confidence in Leupold.
They also said they wouldn't send me the 10/17's temporarily and HD's when they get them. If I took the 10/17 I'd be stuck with them.
I don't really want the 8x42's either. I bought 10x for a reason.

Keep on them. Be firm but nice, I bet it will work out in your favor. Keep track of names as well, that is always helpful.
