I'm looking for a rangefinder for hunting, mostly for antelope.   I've heard good things about the Leica's.  I don't shoot past 500 yards so the Leica 800 and 900's would seem more than adaquate.  I like the fact that they're fairly compact.  Can anyone tell me the difference between these models?  The 800 ranges a bit less distance and is $50 more expensive.  What gives? Does it have any advantages?  Is it more rugged?

Thanks for your replies.  I've read the OT forum for a long time and this is my first post.

Looks like to me they are phasing out the 900 as it is not on the Leica site anymore.  They look the exact same, I would get the 900 since it is cheaper.

The Leica Rangefinders are fantastic units... I have had a 1200 LRF for years and it has served me well.  I  understand the newer CRF models are waterpoof, not just water resistant.  They are also smaller and fit in a shirt pocket.  If I replace my LRF, it will be with a CRF... No question!  NV Hunter

I have a CRF 900 and it covers everything I need.  I haven't seen many of them lately.  I guess they must be coming out with a newer low end distance model...

They are discontinuing the 900 and replacing it with the 800. Get the 900 while you still can at that price before they are all gone for good! Smile

Chris,
Is the Leica Rangemaster 1200 really that much better and quicker on moving targets like the advertising reads below?
Thanks! JF

Leica Rangemaster 900 Scan

A monocular laser rangefinder with 7x magnification and a reach of 826 m (900 yards). Features an LED display that adjusts itself to ambient brightness, multiple modes and integrated diopter compensation.

Leica Rangemaster 1200 Scan

With its great range of 1,200 yards (1,097 m), this Leica laser rangefinder establishes an entirely new class of performance. Its greater reach is ideal for orientation in the wide terrain. In addition, its stronger laser beam produces even more dependable readings -- even under unfavorable conditions, such as rain, haze or strong sunlight. Because of the more powerful laser beam, the distance measuring process is faster than with the Leica Rangemaster 900 scan. This is particularly advantageous with moving targets.
