Got the itch for another alpha class scope , even though I know I don't need it. Want some input anyway. It's going to replace a 3.5-10x44 Conquest on my Cooper Excalibur .30-06. Currently have Luepold 1" mounts on the gun and it's shooting better than 1/2" MOA with factory ammo at 100 yrds.
Looking at the Leica 3.5-18x42 plex with elevation turret. Worried about the thin plex as I do not like real thin plex reticles(but don't want another 4a) . I do not have access to one of these scopes to look at it in person. Plus I would have to change my rings out for this scope. Not worried about the 30mm tube but like that this scope has the hydrophobic coatings. I also hunt with Leica Ultravid 10x42 bino's .
Other option is Swarovski Z5 3.5-18X44 plex with the ballistic turret. Had a swarovski before and liked it a lot for the most part. The plex was big enough to see in real low light but I would have preffered it a tad bigger. I know how well the coil spring system works on these scopes for holding a zero(a huge plus for me). Glass is great. Don't have to change rings(not a huge deal anyway). No hydrophobic coatings.
Price is the same, basically. Which would you guys choose ? Mostly still hunting (with low light shot capability important) from 100-400 yrds. Edited by cbm - October/04/2011 at 16:17 |

I've owned both the scopes you mentioned & they are both excellent, you might want to take a look at the Premier Hunter. If it's the glass only you seek buy the non illum.I have the 7A plex illum. & the only scope in my stable that matches is Zeiss Victory FL which cost addtional $1K.
Forgot to mention ,the Premier line is made here in the USA. Edited by stickbow46 - October/04/2011 at 16:36 |

Those are two very similar scopes, cbm. I think the coil springs are the tie-breaker. I would go with the Swaro.

Looking into it a little more and it looks like the subtensions on both scopes are about the same. Little on the thin side but my last plex model Swarovski PV 3-12X50 was managable in real low light.
I don't know how strong the retention system is in the Leica. So yep, I'm in a "known" durability deal on the Swaro versus the hydrophobic coatings in the Leica ?? I figure the low light performance has to be about the same.

If my rifle shot 1/2 MOA I"d keep what I had. They'll all get you past legal shooting light, easily. If you're bound and determined to switch I'd choose Leica last.

I agree. I sold a Zeiss Diavari, Swaro PV and a Kahles Helia C ..........swore on here even....that Conquests can do all that needs to be done legally. But there is a difference even if it's arguably small .........I am going through one of those phases that I want to pay for that difference "right now". Next year I will probably say I should have just kept the Conquest.

Can anyone tell me if the plex reticles in the Z5 or Leica ER scopes are FFP or SFP ? |

Traditional hunting scopes are all going to be SFP. Especially plex reticles. |
