Is there a big difference other than weight between the two (8x42's), which do you think is more robustly built?

You can't go wrong with either... both are built like a tank.  The older trinovids will cost less, but the newer Ultravids have improved coatings.  it's six of one and half a dozen of the other... NV Hunter

I have an 8X50 Trinovid BA and an 8X32 Ultravid HD.  From my observations of not only these but other Leica binoculars I've used, the Ultravids and Ultra HDs have better light transmission and a bit better resolution than the old trinovids.  All Leicas share the outstanding contrast Leicas are known for.  The Trinovid series give the impression of being tougher, but I can't confirm if that's really the case or if this perception is just due to the more substantial size and weight.
