I know I am treading dangerous waters by asking for a comparision of binoculars from Hunters. As I have found by spending many years reading forums that hunters are the most opinionated people there are (myself included). I am looking for a good comparison of the Leica Ultravid 10 X 42 to the Swarovski EL 10 x 42. I would appreciate anyone who has used these individually but would like to hear from those who have used both in the field.

Just to be clear I know there are others out there but I don't care. I own and have owned others I have a great pair of high end Nikons that I use for bow hunting which I love (just an example). However, I want a good set of long term Binos that I will be using on future hunts in Canada, Alaska, and out west hunting in the Mountains. I have decided that is time to go to the next level and get one of these two really good binos for the long haul. I appreciate in advance the good advice...

Which Ultravid (Ultravid, Ultravid HD) model?  Which EL (EL, EL Swarovision) model?

Allbinos.com has excellent technical information on these bins, but their ranking system is flawed, I think.

No offense intended to any Swaro or Leica owners but, if you already have a Nikon Premier bin then you are going to see much, if any, improvement in switching to a Swaro or Leica. There are, of course, a few key exceptions to that comment. For example, if your Nikons are the LXL and you are considering the Ultravid HD or the Swarovision then you will see an improvement in color fringing control and apparent brightness. Other than that the differences aren't worth discussing.

If the switch is from the Nikon SE then you probably won't not any difference optically but the Leicas and Swaros are waterproof whereas the Nikon porro is not.

Hope this helps.

Which Ultravid (Ultravid, Ultravid HD) model?  Which EL (EL, EL Swarovision) model?

I am looking at the Ultravid leica (non HD) and the Swarovski EL (non Swarovision)...

Both of the binoculars you mention, are very good and here is where personal opinion comes
in, which one is better for your eyes.

If you are looking for long term, as you mention, and buying used, one important consideration is the warranty is clearly superior on the Swarovski, they will usually repair anything sent to them, even if
2nd hand.
Leica warranty does not cover 2nd hand, and repair can be expensive, and may take a long time, if they need to be sent to Germany.

Swarovski repairs in the US, and service is highly rated and fast.

I like the optics on the older Ultravid better than the EL.  I like the ergonomics of the EL better.  NDhunter is right about Swarovski's customer service.  It is truly top-notch.

Essentially, the EL has a larger center field "sweet spot" and the Ultravid has a tad higher contrast.

The EL has a smoother focuser

The Ultravid has a unique method of adjusting the diopter on both sides, using a split focusing wheel.

The EL is an open bridge design; the UV is a traditional solid hinge, and both have their devotees and detractors.  Some say the single solid hinge is stronger, but I'm not sure there's any data to support that; I think it depends more on the design and construction of the individual binos in question.

Both have probably equal light transmission.

Depending on how old the model of EL, it will have "Swaroclean" hydrophobic outer lens coatings, whereas the standard Ultravid doesn't (although the new UV HD does have Leica's "Aquadura" hydrophobic coatings).

You really need to handle both binos and decide which one your eyes like better and which one you prefer ergonomically.  Both are great.
