How do you compare the old Leica 77 with the Swaro 80mm and Zeiss 80mm.  All non ED.

Thanks!

All are great.  Leica is (at this moment) discontinued, I think (new model coming.)

I looked through all 3, plus a few Kowas and ended up buying a Pentax PF80ED.  You might end up with one of the German scopes, but at least look at the Pentax if you can - it's less expensive and (to my eyes) as good optically.

Yes, that is correct.  And that new model is priced in the stratosphere!

Ivanab,
I have the Leica 77 APO, so I can't comment directly on the non-APO version of the 77.  However, I would think the Zeiss beats the other 2, since they don't make a non-HD spotter.  All of their spotters have fluorite (FL) glass.  It is for this reason, along with the dual ratio fine and coarse focus adjustment that the Leica also has, that would steer me toward the Zeiss among these 3, since it is a better value for the $ spent, IMO.  If it weren't for the fact I bought my Leica APO 77 used for a significant discount off the SWFA Sample List, I probably would have bought either the Zeiss, the Nikon ED 82, or the Pentax 80 ED that RC has.  All are excellent scopes!

Thanks for the info.  I have Leica bino's and Zeiss scopes.  I think I am going to get the Zeiss 85 with Loutec.

leica is expensive, but you pay for what you get and the optical quality of any leica product is second to none. For the best optics, stick to the European brands

I mostly agree with that (my binos of choice are Leica Ultravid 10x42s); however, the Pentax PF-series is a true exception  (thus far.)

It is AT LEAST as good as any European scope I've seen that sod for less than $2,000 - and the eye piece is better than many of those for spotters much more expensive.

just as Nightforce beats many European scopes, Pentax makes a great spotter that holds its own with all but the very best of the very best.

Just want to be thorough.
