I have never used a rangefinder before and was considering buying my younger brother the Leica 1200. I have 3 questions that need to be addressed before making this decision. 1. What is the difference between the crf and lrf? 2. Will be used mainly for deer and varmint hunting up to 500 yds., which model do I buy...crf or lrf? 3. What is the battery life on this model? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. |

The CRF is a newer design, much easier to use (sits better in the hand than the older version), and is the one you should purchase.
I own the older LRF and, though it is a great piece of gear, it is not easy to get on target fast due to design and dimensions. Both are great for ranging objects. Mine has ranged worked great for a few years, still original battery. Buy with confidence, the Leica's are nice. (Some say the Swaro is better, I'd expect so at almost 2X the price. Unless you are taking 1800-yard shots, the Leica will do everything you need and more.) |

I have the CRF 1200 and I love it. The glass is good enough you could use it as a substitute for bino's if you wanted to cut down on weight. It will range trees, bushes and hill sides consistently to 1000 yards. It will range bigger trees and larger objects with no problem out to 1300. I have ranges torso sized steel targets out to 1100 without and problems. It is a great peice of gear, very light and compact.
I believe the instructons said the battery life is good for about 5000 fires. |

+3 on the Leica's; it's everything that Rancid and Supertool are saying.
With the crf1200 I ranged objects just over 1300 yards as well with minimal effort. Excellent for spot and stalk hunting, it's extremely fast at acquiring targets. |
