I have some questions about the LEICA 10X42 brf and I am hoping that some of you that own these can give me the info that I need.

I have seen some ratings on other rangefinders ( Deer , Tree, Reflective target ) and I want to know some real world ranging capabilities of the LEICA 10X42 .

How far , Max range have you been able to range things like Trees, Vehicles, Deer, People, Buildings and reflective targets .

I have read of people using them to range prairie dogs and other small animals but they always forget to mention how far it was.

Ideally what I want is a rangefinder that could range a standing person or a fairly small tree effectively at 1000yds.

Any info you can share will be a big help in my decision.

I have been lucky enough to try a set of BRF 10X42 over the last couple of days as I am thinking of buying a pair myself. I
didn't get to range as much stuff as I would have liked to but got a fair idea of what the capabilities are. First off I found the
optics themselves excellent. Exactly what you would expect from Leica, and definately better than my current Pentax DCF WP
10X42s.
With the limited amount of ranging I was able to do this is what I found.

I could consistantly range most trees out to 1100 with some to 1300 yds in all light conditions Conifers reflected better than
deciduous.

The furthest animals I was able to test on were Jeresy cattle out to 500 yds. Horses and Holstiens out around 400 yds. I'm
sure they would have ranged further but that was as far away as I could get without losing sight of the targets.

The most interesting testing was today while out fishing on the river. I was consistantly ranging people at 950 yds in good
morning light BUT before the sun had fully come over the mountain tops. At high noon in bright sun I could still range people
at the same distances but intermittently. The people in question were standing on sand or gravel beaches which did not
reflect readings, so I am confident I was reading distances to the actual people. Hardest part with 10 X optics was staying
steady enough to target something the size of a human at that distance.

Farthest range was a vehicle at just over 1300 yds. Farthest person just over 1000 yds. Smallest target a bald eagle
standing on a gravel bar at about 850 yds.

I'm sorry this isn't more comprehensive, but due to the short time frame I've had the glass it was all I could get done.
Unfortunately I did no work at known distances so I can only guess at the accuracy. Likewise some shots I took and weren't
able to get readings on may have been slightly beyond the advertised 1300 yd capability. Hope this helps.

Addtionally, yesterday under high bright sun with some scattered cloud I could not range cattle beyond 600yds
although I could range buildings and trees directly behind them out to 1100yds. Visible "mirage" or heat wave
was visible through the glass at the time. Pretty tough conditionsfor the laser I presume.

Thank you for taking the time to let me know how the 10X42s worked for you! Sory about not responding a lot sooner! You are the only one who has been able to give me the answers that I need to make a decision.

I have been looking at the Swarovski monocular and the Leica 10X42 binoculars. I realy like the idea of having a binocular but a lot of others have been telling me about what great performance they get from the Swarovski s . It sounds like they both will do what I need and I just need to make a final decision .

Thank you! .

I have used a 10x42 BRFsince they became available here in Australia. The vast majority of my hunting being for Fallow deer both in open country & bushland.

I have found that I can consistently range a Fallow out to approx. 600 metres. From then on I need to range on an adjacent point close to the animal (stump, large rock or sometimes a tree).

They will range out to 1200 metres or even a little further on larger, flat objects but I am very happy with their performance to 600 given that Fallow deer are not very big & I definitely would never try to shoot one at that distance.

Optically, I am absolutely thrilled with their performance & have not had the slightest problem with my unit.

I hope this helps.
