I was given my Great Grandfathers 10 guage last week. He was born 1855 and died 1938. It is old and worn on the outside some. It is a Damascus barrel with hammers and double triggers. Where are the serial numbers located? Can I down load and fire current powder loads? I have some undated photos of him standing with the gun next to a buck he had hanging. He seems to be middle aged in the photos so I figure 1890s or so. Don't have much more info at this time and was not able to bring home because of transportation limitations. Anybody have any info at all?
Thanks in advance. |

+1 to Ed and Pyro.
There were no serial numbers at that time on most firearms.
Old steel is suspect. Old Damascus steel is VERY risky, and for black powder use only even if cleared for use by a gunsmith familiar with black powder arms.
This is a great family memento, and will look really fine hanging over a fireplace or on a wall. That is its highest and best (and safest) use.

Hi, congratulations and welcome to the "Smith" family.
Here's the URL for the L.C. Smith collector's website: http://www.lcsmith.org/index.html You'll find information on models & dates of manufacture there. The serial # is usually on the watertable, the flat surface under the barrels, and is visible when the gun is broken open. Damascus barrels were considered a premium barrel when they were introduced. They are not inherently dangerous, BUT, they were designed for the loads of their time which developed much lower pressures than most of today's loads. I would recommend that you do not attempt to fire it unless you have done enough research to thoroughly understand what the appropriate loads for it are. Otherwise +3 on enjoying it as a wall hanger. |

NO - do not use modern powder its a blackpowder gun best used as a wall hanger. Buy yourself something in good condition and shoot that.
