Haven't been reloading long enough to know the effects of the two.  I have been ready places that some folks use the magnum even when the reloading manual doesn't call for it.  I use the magnum in my subsonic loads and wonder if I should try them in the 300 win mag loads I am working on or am I better off just using the large rifle.  Some places say they use the Mag. because the low temps they shoot in, others different reasons.  I shoot year round coldest is around 40 and high around 100.  If magnums help should I reduce the powder charge to keep the pressure levels down?

use magnums for magnums, use magnums if you plan to hunt in colder weather, even if its a non magnum use them if you hunt in cold weather. i wouldnt recommend using a standard large rifle primer for any magnum no matter what load or bullet your using.

I've used standard primers in my .338 Win Mag with no problems, and increased accuracy.  BUT, I didn't use compressed loads or ball powder.  Nor was I using Weatherby magnum cartridges.

When I've hunted in super cold weather, I used Federal factory rounds which probably DO use magnum primers.

We've had this discussion in the forum before.  Someone here can probably provide a cross-reference.

I use magnum primers in anything that I load with more than 60gr of powder.

I use mag in my 22-250.  Not at max for powder by 2 gr.  Simplifies life with only 1 kind of large rifle primers.

I use Fed215 primers in everything.  There are over 40 rifles on my reloading spreadsheet right now and I have never had a problem finding a load using magnum primers.  If you switch to large rifle primers and get a good group then in all probability you could do the same thing by lowering the powder a bit.

Just scored a brick today.  First I've seen in almost a year.

So the only calipers I reload are 223, 308, 300 win mag and soon 7mm mag.  Think i could use mag in all of the later 3? or all?

I don't like offering hear say for info but, the source is very reliable. You can load magnum in all you mentioned and the magnum will typically add 100 fps over a standard rifle primer. The pressure is only a concern if you are loading max or slightly more. Unless your load chart says NOT to use magnum primers they have factored in the option.

CCI BR-2 pushing a 168 Amax @ 2690 fps

CCI Mag Primers with exact same load only primers changed.  NOTE the FPS
almost 100 fps faster.

Edited: That was with ZERO pressure signs.
