Hi, I am about to buy a set of Leupold mark 4  1" rings and was wondering if anyone lap's mark 4's.  I have heard badger does not need to be lapped, but i was wondering about the Leupold. Are they such high quality that it should not matter?
Thanks

Alignment, not lapping. One of the gunsmiths I used to use, Mr. Sizemore (armorer for the 1980 Olympics), would use nothing but Leupold bases and rings because he said he never had to lap them. The rifle he set up is the only one I have Leupold base/rings on.

No lapping here either, but several people swear by it.
This subject is a lot like barrel break in. Some do, some don't.

Alignment? Are you talking about the turn in style, because the mark 4's attach to picitinney rail and i dont see how you can align them.

Just a comment to ensure everything is in alignment.  Sometimes even a rail can be offset slightly.  You know how precise the Germans are, I once had to have a Voere Titan II's mounting holes filled and redrilled.  Could get no mount/ring set properly aligned.  Unusual, but it COULD happen.

Also the actual receiver of your gun could be out of alignment slightly.  By lapping the rings it can make things straight for your scope to sit in to it does not put stress on the tube.

This guy makes tools to help you make sure everything is square when you mount a scope.  It is good stuff.  I think it would surprise people how often either the rings or base or gun receiver are not square or a combination of them.  If any of them are then the pressure will be passed onto your scope when it is tightened down.  Over time it could cause mechanical problems with your scope or complete failure.  I bet that is one reason many scopes have problems because they are not mounted properly.  Not bad investment if you buy expensive scopes in my opinion.  http://www.kokopelliproducts.com/acckit.htm
