Any one have experience with this one?

The only thing I see that Nikon Fieldscope mini has over this is that the eyepiece is interchangeable and it's waterproof.

I don't know the answers to the questions I will pose but, a few thoughts that came to mind are:

1. Waterproofing and interchangeable eyepiece capacity are both pretty big deals.

2. Is the Kowa made with ED glass?

3. Does the Kowa use comparable lens coatings?

4.. Is the Kowa built to similarly high standards?

5. Does the Kowa offer a comparable warranty?

Any or all of these could really make a big difference in establishing a reasonable price.

BTW Leupold also makes a 15-30x50 compact spotting scope. It retails for $400 and I wonder if it would be the more appropriate comparison model to the Kowa.

I would like to have the waterproofing but interchangeable eyepieces are not important to me

2. Is the Kowa made with ED glass?

Yes, PROMINAR ED LENS (web site)

The call this morning told me the optics are comparable to their Gensis line of binos.

3. Does the Kowa use comparable lens coatings?

The call this morning told me: Fully Multi-Coated Optics

4.. Is the Kowa built to similarly high standards?

I assume so. I've nothing but good things about the Kowa line of scopes and binoculars

5. Does the Kowa offer a comparable warranty?

From their web site: Warranty: Lifetime of the product

I agree. But I'm trying to save some big bucks with minimal compromise

If I were looking at Leupold this may be a little closer to what I'm looking for:

I like the physical size on 10-20X40 Leupy but I'm concern about the glass and coatings. Everything I've read tells me the higher magnification the better the optics have to be to a clear view. That's why I'm looking into a fully Multicoated, ED lense system.

Here's the manufacturers site:

http://www.kowascope.com/frontend/proddetail.asp?pn=TS-504&a mp;co=10000324

Basically, It'll be my glove box spotter. For when my 8X20 Zeiss Victory (my glove binos) can't give me the detail I'm looking for.

I have the 10-20x40 Gold Ring Spotting Scope.  It's a great little optic.  I have been quite impressed with how good it is, especially considering it's very small size.

It does not however, have ED glass (nor does the 15-30x50 Gold Ring.)  Since it's not a particularly "high power" scope and it is not really designed or intended to be used for digiscoping, I'm not sure the lack of ED glass matters much.

FrankD made an interestng observation not too long ago that the benefits of an ED objective lens are largely wasted if the eyepeice is not also constructed with ED glass. It might be worth the call to Kowa to find out what the eyepiece on the 504 has for glass.

I've heard this point also. The ED is supposed to be necessary over 40x zoom. ED on less than that may be overkill

That was another complaint I've heard about the 504. It does not have the better eyepiece available to its bigger brothers.
