I would probably pick .308 for her because .308 brass is still out there to be had.
(I will use Barnes data to compare apples to apples.)
6.5 Creedmoor 120 gr Barnes Tripple Shock at 2910 Feet Per Second 2257 Ft Lbs Energy 7mm-08 Remington 120 gr Barnes Tripple Shock at 3005 Feet Per Second 2537 Ft Lbs Energy .308 130 gr Barnes Vor Tx 3125 Feet Per Second 2818 Foot Pounds Energy .243 80gr 3350 fps 1994 Foot Pounds Energy. Velocity gives it consistent expansion with a solid copper bullet that does not fragment. So the old .243 is still a fine choice. The guy I was talking to was the one shooting the 7mm Rem Mag that was used to stuff falling down when he shot it, who was not happy about having to track his buddy's antelope for miles. He did mention it was hit a little far back. It was definitely not an endorsement for the 6.5C and I am a bit bias against 6.5C. I'm just not fond of every rifle in the store being 6.5C with few other choices, and no ammo or brass for it makes it rather pointless to me. Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd - March/06/2022 at 21:30 |

Nice write up Wes… 👍👍
We've been pretty fortunate using the 6.5 Creed, no issues so far, yeah bullet placement sure helps . 😉 With that said my fav the past 10 years has been the 7mm.08 (.284 120gr. TTSX reloads). 🦌. 💥 |

Iowa doesn't use high power rifles with a few exceptions and the law keeps changing. Last deer I shot in Texas was with a 30-06 a long time ago. Here I use a 50 cal musket and recently can use 44 mag or 45-70 last year they changed rules again must be larger than .35 caliber, but they removed wording about requiring straight wall cartridges, clearly they did not realize what that includes, the game wardens were clueless when my friend said oh good I'll use my 50BMG and I'm like ... so .375 H&H is OK but not .300 WM. I'm sure any of these will kill deer there are plenty being shot with 300 Blackout and the up side to that caliber is making brass from .223 is not hard, it has very little recoil.

6.5 Creed is a popular choice... however an often overlooked 6.5 is the original 260 remington. does all that a creedmoor does, only better, but without the prom queen\popluar girl reputation. lol
Can load 260 in 308 brass with a neck resize, and can get in small and large primer pockets as well. IMO the best .264 round made due to its ease of loading. Don't get me wrong I have a Kimber in 6.5 Creedmoor.... its the lightweight hunter. little over 6#s scoped and loaded. I had a pile of .264 bullets and they didn't offer in another option so i went with it.

Indeed! I have both the 6.5CR and the .260 and the prom queen analogy is perfect.

6.5x55 lovely calibre. Easy on the shoulder and within its range limits very capable. We have a old Finn hunter in our camp and that’s all he used for moose. Great sectional density.

The old Swedish Mauser is good enough for moose and polar bear.....but you gotta have ammunition for it.....

"but you gotta have ammunition for it....." This is where you have to make the hard choice on caliber selection in todays market. If you can't feed it then it doesn't matter how much you like the caliber. Some calibers like 300 WSM brass does not have a very long lifespan. Not much revolver ammo seems to be getting produced currently either.
Any caliber you can build with .308 or .223 brass should be good to go.
