Personally I have always liked the 222 Rem.  Not too noisy, no recoil and deadly to at least 250 yards.

Probably .204 also !

But I love my .223 and there is an overwhelming amount of ammo.....cheap.....comparatively ! If I was not worried about hunting deer or ammo cost............I'd go .204 next time!

I have had both .223 and .204 Ruger and like the .204 more.

.223 ammo might be easier to buy.

With a rifle that weighs about 8 pounds or so it is usually possible to spot your hits thru the scope with the .204.

Check to see ammo availability before you jump in!! Here in the states a couple months ago I would have said for sure go 223. But now with a run on everything 22cal not so much. How popular is 204 compared to 223 where you are??

+1 this, and I like the 223. You can find excellent utility rifles such as the Remington model 788 or the 722 in these rounds.

As your question on the 22 Hornet if you do a comparison the ballistic path of the 45 Gr Hornet is almost identical to the 30-30 Win 150 gr, using a 100 yd zero, out to 250 yd. (using the Remington shoot program.) The Hornet will carry close to 345 ft/lb energy at 150 yd where the 22 mag will drop to 130 ft/lb. at the same distance.

Took my new 223 out a couple of days ago.
Knocked a wild goat flat at 250mts. Also a few bunnies at the same distance, but with a bipod.
Recoil is mild but noisier than my 22 magnum of course.
Found it very reliable

I love the .204 but after 3 shots you got to wait for the barrel to cool down other wise the accuracy goes out the window. Those rounds are smok'en at over 4K fps.
