I think I can accurately say it is not a quality scope.  It smells to high heavens, a tar like smell I assume is from the bake process on the paint coating. It smelled up my entire gun safe.  It only cost $150 which is not much money to pay for all those features, as you might imagine. It has no country of origin on it and came with no paperwork or instructions (although they are available on the website)

It is not the free lunch you might have thought you were getting.  I have mounted it on a Winchester .338 Winmag with boss system but I have not fired it yet.  I am not anticipating a happy ending to this story.

If you have not bought it, don't.  Consider that much money to be at maximum 25% of what you need for scope with those features.

If you already purchased it, well, be philosophical about it like I am...it did not break the bank..

Any scope that has to discribe itself with that much verbage is probable not worth a look. Stick to short and sweet discriptions like: "Zeiss "  Thats all you need to read to buy it!

Crapola, I think they probably start life off as damaged or out of spec IORs.

I have not heard anything good about these scopes. If I had a scope that smelt like burnt tar I would pitch it in a barrel of oil. LOL

I have experience with russian optics ( I buy all the models !! in a russian store called gimex ) So I can tell you:

NONE of the russian scopes gives sniper grade cuality (1p59 is really good but its export is forbiden by russian laws)

PSO/POSP are really good FOR THE MONEY ( they cost 50-150u$ in russia) and very strong , they are a good choice for AK, not for a more accurate rifle.

Best russian brands are BELOMO/ZENITH and NOBOSIBIRSK OPTICAL PLANT.

I dont like VOMZ  products like the PILAD scopes.

Now the VPOI: THIS IS NOT A RUSSIAN SCOPES, THIS IS JUST A CHEAP LOW CUALITY CHINESE SCOPE MADE FOR THE RUSSIAN MARKET (ANOTHER CHINESE SCOPE EASY TO FIND IN RUSSIA IS THE STURMAN ).

One advice: NEVER BELIEVE IN THE KALINKA SPECIFICATION OF SCOPES, THEY ARE JUST LIES.

You can read some thinks about rusian scopes in the site AVTOMATS IN ACTION.

Last of all: if you want a good scope with east block style the answer is IOR.

Well, there you have it...Ots03 even sounds Russian when I read his email!  I still have the scope and will shoot with it soon and let you all know the rest of the story.

It makes sense that it is actually from PRC as the quality is definitely not there.

I am not going to follow STWSniper's advice as I am hopeful that if the smell does not abate eventually it might save me money in masking scents...

When I emailed the guy who sells them in Southport NC, he told me they were not on a par with any German scope, in spite of his website, but that they were the best scope with those features that one could buy for under $200.00  Given how few scopes with these features are available for this price, he is probably correct.  It might also be the worst scope you can buy for that price as well.

Do you have a range report for this scope yet?

I spoke with one of the guys deployed in Chechnya during the conflict back in 90ties . He had NPZ scope on his Dragunov. He told me those scopes were very well made but he couldn't t vouch for other scope makers in Russia.

You can buy that exact scope from "a competitor". Google up the term "NPZ scope" (without quotes) and you'll find it right away.

I like Russian scopes (and Russian women). I actually have one that OTS03 speaks low of, a VOMZ Pilad 8X56. I got it for about $90 used off fleaBay. It has a huge bright sight picture, I mounted it on a Savage 22 but haven't made it to the range yet.

The reticle is not centered, adjusting for windage and elevation actually moves the reticle. Apparently this is very common in Russian made scopes, always ask when buying one if it has centered reticle.

Cheers,
Craig

NPZ is the same thing than nobosibirsk optical plant..very good products

About your vomz pilad 8x56.
Russian glass is good, and looks rugged, but
This in not a 1 piece tube also I have problems with the iluminated reticle model (this is not waterproof also some dust, dirt,  oil or whatever can increase in the scope by the battery housing)..
Most of the russians are non centered reticle (only "last generation military scopes and the " low price" belomo 8x56 is centered reticle.

Hi Chris,

I like it for the price. In my experience so far it is superior to a similar priced Millett (Chinese) scope.

I have an older one without any illumination.

Also, regarding dirt : I only shoot at a rifle range, either in grass or off a wooden bench. I guess my scopes have an easy life :)

Happy shooting,
Craig
