I'm still in my search for a new scope (upgrade) for my Rem 700 chambered in 7mm Rem Mag.  I'll be using this rifle for deer and an elk sometime in the future.  Deer only for right now.  Most of my shots will be from 100-200 yards, BUT, I've got a hunt this fall for mule deer in CO where my shot could be anywhere from 100-400+ yards, which I've practiced at.  So, even though the most of my hunting will be at somewhat close range, that mule deer hunt that could pose a long shot is a very important shot for me to make, so I want to make sure I get a scope that will accomadate.  I'm upgrading my scope, and here is what I've got it narrowed down to:

a. Kahles 3-9x42
b. Swaro 3-10x42
c. Leupold vx3 3-10x42 B&C reticle
d. other opinions?

I'd go with the Swaro hands down if it wasn't for the price jump.  Your opinions?

Perhaps the Sightron Big Sky 3-12 X 42 with the H.H.R? I do like the Swaros though if you want to drop the $.Big Smile

If you want something different, try the Meopta r1 4-12X40.

I have three Kahles scopes, 2 2.5-10x50 CS and a 3-9x42 KX.  You'll hear (if you haven't already) about the warranty situation which personally, doesn't really scare me-  if I have to send it overseas then that's fine with me.

As for the optics, you wouldn't regret it.  Personally, my eye is not "refined" enough to tell the difference between the truly high end optics in this category, but it's a cut above my other scopes (Leupold, Burris, Sightron).

BTW, if you have a line on a 3-9x42 KX and you choose to go with something different, please drop me a line...  Big Smile  I'm always on the lookout.

muley, I don't believe you will be disappointed with any of the scopes mentioned.  I think your decision will really come down to how much money you're really willing to spend on a scope vs. other gear you may need for your hunt.  I think the Swaro and Kahles are very close optically, both being moderately better than the Leupold.  However, you may not find the modest improvement in optical performance to be worth the price difference, and only you can determine this.  As mentioned, I would also look at Zeiss Conquest, as well as Bushnell Elite 4200 and/or 6500.  Another very good scope in this power class to consider is the Trijicon Accupoint 3-9X40.

I'd go with the Kahles for that price range, although you can find some Swaro PVs at some pretty good prices.  PM me with your email address if you're looking for more info on that option.

I am totally on the same wave-length as RifleDude.
Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42 or 50 would be an excellent alternative. Why?
Here are some aspects:

1. The optics are great. Not the best but not long from the best either.
2. One of the best magnification ranges in the world. That allows you to hunt pretty much, almost anything you wish.
3. Extremely robust scope
4. Constant eye-relief
5. Mechanically perfect. It works like a Swiss watch.
6. And not least: THE PRICE

I like all the other ones you mentioned, especially Swarovski and Kahles. But if you are to look at all these aspects, I think Bushnell rocks Rocker.
