Hi there

I am trying to finally decide on a scope for my rifle. I had a bushnell 3200 3 by 9

mounted on my rem 700 in 300 win mag. The scope lost zero in extreme tempretures or if it was bumped.

The forums have been very helpfull and i would like to thank everybody fo responses to my questions.

now one last question i hunt mostly near dark at 200 to 500 yards for elk and deer.

I found the magnification to be lacking on the 3 by 9 power and the cross hairs could be difficult to see against a dark forest backround.

so light, clarity and magnification are very important. I was looking at the 4200 with an illuminated dot. but now i feel i should either go with the kahles american or zeiss conquest in a higher power variable.

I want to be happy with this scope and i don't want to have to buy another one but i don't want to spend to much either. what do you guys think?

I cannot speak to the Kahles American. Though Kahles makes a solid product.

Though like others familar with the Zeiss Conquest it is an awesome scope for the money. The 44mm and 50mm Conquest is what I would suggest. I think you would  be very happy with the Conquest; especially for what you're describing.

What's the budget, before we go any further??

I have zero experience with Kahles scopes.

I've looked through a couple, and have read favorable reviews of them, but that's about it.

"IF" your like most of us and on a budget, a Zeiss Conquest in the 2.5-10 variety will serve you well.

The Z-Plex reticle is a good reticle too.

Simply said, the Conquest is all the scope 90% of big game hunters in North America will ever need or want.

If you want to squeeze out those "last few seconds" of legal shooting hours, then by all means upgrade to a Zeiss VM/V, S&B, etc.

That said, the Conquest has performed for me in every shooting scenario I have been in. I doubt that the Kahles would out perform the Conquest much, if any.

Maybe I'm wrong.

It seems to me, after owning several high end scopes that there comes a time when a $1200 scope just isn't worth having, when I can get a $600 Conquest and get the same results.

It's called diminished returns.

The Zeiss Conquest has filled that void between the high dollar Euro's and the medium priced scope market.

Laser etched reticle, fast focus eye piece, qulity optics, etc. It's hard to justify spending my hard earned on a high end Euro.

Even though I do love the Euro's!!

I personally prefer the Conquest, others will pick the Kahles.  They are both good.  I think you might reconsider your 3-9X statement with either one of these scopes.  The optics are far superior to the 3200 that you are used to.
