I've been comparing my CL 4-12x52mz and my 4.5-14x44 Conquest today.

I had my rangefinder with me and I found out pretty quick that the numbers on all of my side-focus knobs/AO are either completely wrong or calibrated at low power.  Anybody found a cure for this?

I'll have to say that I don't think there were any shots that I could have made with one scope that the other couldn't make.  The Kahles was a little brighter when the light got low but it should have been as it was 52mm vs. the 44mm Conquest.

The biggest thing that really stood out was that the conquest was slightly fuzzy between where the duplex of the mil-dot gets thick and the edge of the picture. The center 40% or so was very clear but as you traveled from the center out to any edge, the clarity would drop off increasingly becoming worse the closer you got to the edge.  This was hardly noticable below 6x but really annoying at 12x. I was watching cows at 300 yards. I'd use the side-focus to focus on a cow in the center of the reticle, then as I moved the scope horizontally, the cow would increasingly and steadily lose clarity.  With the Kahles, the cows looked very clear all across the picture with a slight loss of clarity at the extreme (maybe 5%) edges.

I cleaned the lenses at one point just to make sure but the effect was still there.  Am I the only one who has noticed this or is it common?  It reminds me of a man at a gunshop telling me a long time ago that the most expensive scopes had the lenses polished all the way to the edges and that's what you paid alot for.

Off track a bit perhaps but are they both plex reticles? If so how do the reticles compare for thickness and low light prominence? Just curious as I'm considering a kahles and wonder how their etched plex compares to my favorite so far the zeiss z-plex?

I like the Zeiss plex better than the kahles because the gap is wider, subtensions on the thin part are the same.  The kahles looks very much like the standard Leupold Duplex. I hunted with the Kahles last year and the reticle was not an issue at last light although the #4 is probable better because the big part and little part are thicker.

I must say that the conquest has the best reticle I've seen (in all ways), I love their plex and their mil-dot.  Also, I positioned my scopes where light would hit the rear lens and all of them turned gold except the conquest which stayed coal-black at all times.

I don't think my CL Kahles really has an etched reticle like they claim.  I know this isn't a huge issue but I just wish somebody would get all the good stuff together in one package.

The ultimate scope for me would be a 2.5-15x50 or 3-18x50 Swaro Z6 with side focus, and etched Zeiss plex reticle.  Excellent

I've always said that if we could use the parts we like out of the various scopes and build our perfect scope it would be nice. I want that conquest reticle (its the best I've yet seen in any scope) but it would also be nice to have that elite rainguard also (it really works in wet nasty weather).

I agree with Focus on this one, the Ziess reticle, the Bushnell rain guard, But must add to that the Tasco price.  LOL!!!!

Good post TBrake, informative to say the least. I have heard the same thing about etched reticles turning color just like the nickle wire ones in reflected light but don't see how thats possible with nothing for the light to reflect off of. Sweet spot does get bigger with the higher end lenses, I agree.
