Hello Forum,

I am trying to decide between these two scopes. Unfortunately, I will not be able to try them out before purchase. Scope
will be on top of a Sako .270 WSM in S. Texas. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Kahles CL. They have improved the lens coatings over the standard American series which was already an outstanding scope. The Kahles also has strengthened the internal components and has a significantly wider field of view. The Kahlas, for us weight conscious folks is significantly lighter than the Leupold. The Kahles sports a side mounted focus adjustment. Even though the Leupold sports a slighter larger exit pupil by the nature of is odd shaped objective lens, we all know that light transmission is largely a factor of the quality of the glass and its lens coatings. I am quite sure that Kahles has complete control of the lens manufacturing process as opposed to Leupold outsourcing their glass. It's a quality issue in my opinion. The jury is still out on the Leupold VX-L. It MIGHT turn out to be a really winner, but I just can't get past it's odd shaped ascetics. For the money, I would go with the already proven winner, the CL.

If you got the dosh$$$ get the Kahles, you only live once.
I'm a big fan of the VX111's not to sure about the VX-L.

For me in a 270WSM would be the 3-9x42 Kahles.Always wanted a Kahles .

I have a CL 3-9X42 and a VX L 3.5-10X50.  I haven't had the Leupold long enough to really test it, but I can tell you it's very bright and very sharp.  Also, being able to mount it low makes a huge difference in the way the rifle feels. Actually, the Leupold weighs a little less if you compare both with 50mm objectives.  I would choose the VX L.  The Kahles 3-10X50 would be great, but I wouldn't buy one because of teh mount height.

I own two Kahles CL scopes (the 50mm & 52mm) and have spent some time looking through the VX L.  In my opinion, it's apples & oranges.  The Kahles CL is the best 1" scope on the market, period.  The VX L (to my eyes) is good & will sell simply because it is a Leupold and they'll put a ton of marketing dollars behind the scope.  But the glass isn't in the same class as the Kahles.

I use both my scopes to hunt whitetail & boar (among other critters as well) in south Alabama and the optical clarity, brightness & performance is nothing short of outstanding.

If your top priority in this scope purchase is making sure the setup has as low profile as possible then the VX L (with the "crescent" shape) might be worth considering.  However, you'll be paying over $850 for that feature & when the most important functioning pieces of the scope (the GLASS) in no way justify that kind of pricing.

Obviously, all this is opinion and there are many who wouldn't agree with me.  However, I do know about the scopes you're considering and I can't imagine you not feeling that the CL isn't worth every penny AND performs second to none in its class.

Best of luck to you & let us know what you decide...

Thanks for all the responses. I decided to go with the Kahles Cl 4x12x52. Everyone who has purchased this scope has been
more than satisfied. While the Leupold VX-L is probably a great scope with a great new design, I ulitmately decided to buy the
best glass within my budget.

Thanks again for all the help. I look forward to reporting back after comparions to other scopes on the ranch, Leupold, Zeiss,
Swarovski and Nikon.
