Sometimes your first purchase from an on-line vendor is a learning experience.  Sometimes your first purchase from on on-line vendor is an exercise in frustration.  Sometimes your first purchase from an on-line vendor leaves you reeling from the after affects of a 'bait and switch'.

Sometimes your first purchase from an on-line vendor restores your faith in the medium.

My Kahles 8x42's arrived today via UPS from SWFA.  I bought off of The Sample List and deal with "JW".  I could not be happier.  The expert advice, the hand selection, the quick shipping, the complete package, and the 'home style' touch all served to make this a great purchase experience.

As for the binocular itself, I'm finding the close focus to be better than advertised.  Focusing on the engraving on a dollar bill attached to a white background at eye level, I'm coming into focus right at 6 feet and 3 inches.  That's well under the quoted spec of 8.4 feet.

As for the quality of the image (it's a sunny day out today so it's not too much of a challenge as far as conditions go), I'm able to count the greater covert feathers on an American Goldfinch perched in the shadows of a Bald Cypress tree at about 10 yards--which is to say, I'm able to count individual black feathers on a bird perched in the shadows near the trunk of a tree from 30 feet away.

I think that qualifies at LEAST as "Bright", certainly far brighter than my Bausch & Lomb Legacy 10x50 porros or my Bushnell Legend 8x26 compact porros that I've been so fond of (I brought them outside for a side by side test).

The center focus knob is smooth and very firm--there's no 'mystery' mushiness to the focusing affect.  It's a very positive response and it stays in place if I set the Kahles down to look through another source for a moment.

The interchangeable eye pieces proved to be just that--interchangeable.  While the cups themselves are securely held in place, it literally takes seconds to complete a change out.  The texture of the rubber armor is reassuring--it's not soft like a Hogue rubber grip, nor is it hard like a Goodyear tire, it feels more along the lines of the steering wheel in a well made sports car.

Tracking against a white cloud in a bright sky, I can detect only the faintest signs of slightly green chromatic aberrations at the extreme far edges of the view and while viewing a red brick wall with bright grouting at 50 yards, there is not the slightest bit of curvature of the image nor is there any loss of a crisp sharp image.  Looking into a copse of trees along the 'back 40' from approximately 25 yards, the whole woods stands out with something akin to a 3D affect.  Changing the focus point from the perimeter of the stand of trees to the gaps that allow me to see and focus farther in is accomplished with very minimal movement of the center focus knob.  This is a hunter's glass--sharp image, bright, quick focus response, waterproof, big enough to handle with thick gloves but light enough not to be a burden (26 oz), and built like a truck.

As a combination hunter and birdwatcher, they should do well for me.  If you're thinking Kahles, I could not recommend SWFA any higher as your vendor of choice.

WOW....You should be doing reviews professionally for a hunting magazine.  Excellent ...I could almost see what you were seeing.
