Decided that I'm going to be picking a CJ-7 here shortly, once my motorcycle sells. I am currently looking for a 78-85 era Jeep. How many of you have owned a CJ, and what are some great memories you've had in Jeeps.

I pulled a jeep Cherokee out of a mud puddle that I just drove through in my old International Scout II. That was a fond memory of a jeep.
Oh you said in a jeep, not with a jeepBig Grin

My uncle has a WWII jeep complete with machine gun post (minus the machine gun darn it) that he got from the local school district.  They had it parked in the back of the bus shed.  Working on restoring it.  Always wanted one, never had the time or money.

My dad and I rebuilt this CJ5 from the frame up when we were younger
Put a ton of work into it but nobody drives it anymore haha. We are more than likely gonna sell it and build a shop with the money now  Loco

My 1st new vehicle out of high school was a 1984 model CJ7. I really loved that ride. I put 330,000 miles on it before I sold it in '92. Wish I still had it.

The great memories involved were Girls, Girls, Girls.....CoolCoolCoolCoolCoolCoolCoolCoolCoolCool

Had all these on the road at one time.  Had quite a few more I bought for parts but the supplies are all dried up now.

My favorite.

The wife's.  Strictly for plowing now.

I had a 78 CJ5 with the AMC 304 V8 with a little work done to it, running through a 4sp and a dana 300.  "little work" means that it had high comp pistons, port and polish, high rise intake, holley 750 double pumper, fender well exit headers, a whole 15 inches of exhaust after that.  Spring over plus a 6 inch lift, with 35 inch tires.  and bla bla bla.  I stupidly sold it a few years back.

It would do wheelies Loco

I nicknamed it the Rebel Rouser (note: NOT Rabble-rouser) and hung a fake skull off the winch cable in front with a rebel bandanna tied around it.

Oh, best memory...  Had to have been the time I almost ran over a honda civic.  Going around a sweeping corner that turned almost back the direction you had just come from.  It was a mess of a road full of pot holes (Military base) any rate the jeep kinda rode like a buckboard wagon on pogo sticks, and I hit one of these craters and when I did I accidentally mashed the pedal to the floor.  Jeep pulled a wheelie heading straight for a little civic stuck in the line of traffic going the opposite direction.  I still can't believe I didn't squash the car, but I remember the drivers eyes got as big as oranges and could see him make some attempt at a scream and then scrunch down in his seat.

Back in the 60's my Dad picked up an old Jeep. We fixed it up, painted it green / yellow striped (why, I have no recollection), named it Harriet and ran it up at our hunting cabin for many years. Twas a blast (especially on icy hills thru the woods). I'd forgotten all about Harriet till this thread. Excellent

We have a '42 Ford GPW (Ford improved version of the "Willys design" during WWII) that we use for deer hunting. The jeep's been in the family since they got it at a military auction back in the late 40's. The thing will climb just about anything we put in front of it and is still going strong.  Thunbs Up

Yeah the original post had all the info, and for some reason wouldn't post so I had to re-post it to see if it would work!

The Good!
1981 CJ-7
AMC 304 V8 bored .030, AMC 401 crank with mild crane race cam. Edelbrock 4BBL carburetor
Torque-Flight 727 3-speed auto(thinking about replacing with 4 speed auto)
Dana 300 transfer case(single stick)
Custom-made Spicer two-piece drive-shafts, front and rear.
Dana 44 axles, front and back, back locked in, front has Detroit Lockers.
4.11 gears front and back.
35X12.5 Super Swamper TSL Boggers on Eagle alloy rims
3" body lift, 4" suspension with RS9000 nitrogen filled adjustable shocks.
Full custom roll cage.
Brand new gas tank, and fuel lines.
85% or better tread left.

The Bad.
Body work, some full rust through spots, and a paint job(or full rhino lined tub)
Small leak near dipstick entrance to oil pan.
Half gauges don't work, speedo is off. Interior needs lined. Seats are pretty good.
No hard top, or soft top. Just two very used bikinis.
No RADIO!!!
Slight carb problems, been sitting for 6 months before I picked it up.
Needs a general go through to see how everything is.
Slight brake work (even though it has brand new braided stainless steel lines.
Alignment and wheels need balanced.
No spare tires or rim whatsoever.

But the thing rides like a champ, and sounds amazing. It rides even better than my buddies 98 Wrangler!

I've got a 48 willy's CJ-2a sitting in the barn shed rotting away.  was going to rebuild it, never found the time... Drove it on a hunting lease for a couple of seasons, been sitting for about 8 years now.
I should have done SOMETHING with it...

I recently looked into some Jeeps, even a new Wrangler or an older CJ.  After some digging decided that I need a car, not a project (or at least not this much of a project).  Looked around and bought a new Toyota FJ Cruiser.  So far I am quite happy with it.

If I ever need another project though, I will look for an older CJ.

I had a jeep for a while. It was a M-715 1 1/4 ton pickup truck (military version of the Gladeator). it was a beast. I bought it at a Civil Air Patrol auction. Did some restoration work into it, and used it for a farm truck. One of the batteries burst in it, and I took it to a friends to work on it. After setting there for a year, I decided to sell it. Sold it within a week for what I paid for it.
Sure would like to have it back.
