I am looking at getting a scope for my hsuband for Christmas. He has a 30-06 featherweight he wants to use for hunting. After doing some searching I found the redfield widefield scope and decided to start looking for one. A friend of mine has a 3 x 9 x 40 widefield scope and is asking $100 for it. It is a older scope, but in great shape with no marks that I can see. Is this a good price to pay, or should I try to get him to lower it a little?

Any advice?
Thanks

I forgot to mention it does not have a field of view, the MOA is unknown, and does not have fingertip adjustment.

All scopes have a field of view.  Are you saying that there are no adjustment knobs?  I believe all widefields had adjustment knobs and they were 1/4" click adjustment.  Your price is probably fair.  But for $200 you can buy him a nice Burris FFII and he will have a quality modern scope with a warranty.

No it is to much, $50 would be about right. This scope is Circa 1970-80  Widefields merely block part of the image to give the appearance not through optics manipulation- there is no warranty, the 1/4" sets tended not to work well, (at any rate you are gambling the repeatability is there- which in my experience with Widefields it isn't) The adjustments on most early redfields are sloppy. Redfield is now owned by Mead, Redfield early best are now Burris. Last but not least you can get a used Leo 3x9 for $100 send it back for free and have an almost new scope.

I was considering a Redfield because their store is here in town. They usually have some nice ones in the rebuilt category for a lot less than a new one. I just happened to get an offer from a friend and wondered if it was worth the price.

My husband has been looking at Burris because they are about an hours drive from where we live. However, I like the widefield view better than just the round view.

Although after talking to you guys, a warranty would be a good idea. I might just stick with going directly to Redfield. Thanks

If cost is a problem I would order the FF2, put the binos aways for a b-day or next year's Christmas.  I'm looking at setting up a .243 youth model, and the FF2 3x9 is my top choice for value and quality (and the free binos)

I remember when Redfield offered a pretty good scope back in the days of the early 80's but then things went down hill in quality.  For $100, I'd save my money and get a new scope.  Newer scopes have new technology and a warranty and better optical quality.

Unless your set on the Redfield brand I'd look at:

Burris Full Field

Nikon Buck Master

Bushnell 3200 Elite

All of those above will out perform the older Redfield and can be purchased for only a bit more money.
