I have one... mine's not "dead".  However, I do like the Lott better.

With today's improved powders, the 458WinMag is a much more formidable "creature" than it was just a few short years ago.  Certainly, ALWAYS, a viable deer, elk, moose, bear gun, improvements in power technologies have moved it back into the DGR category that it had once fallen out of favor for.  Those powders also improve the already awesome destructive power of the 458 Lott.

I believe the 458WinMag will be around for many more years than it already has been...

Its very interesting as a reloader the runs of brass are getting shorter > that means the Brass is getting harder to Find! > Its  not the Guns > ITs the Brass!

Welcome to Optics Talk.

I shot, for the first time, a .458 SOCOM today at the local range. About kicked the taste outta my mouth.

The ammo isn't hard to find. Most of the boxes I have seen run from $5/round up to $7/rd.

I've not had any problem finding ammo, though some of the prices are inflated.  There are still some deals around.
I have not searched for any brass... just reuse the factory or custom stuff I shoot.  I have mostly used "custom" loads.

Not to me!

450gr. bullets (NF FPS, CPS, or Barnes FPS) loaded with 72gr. of AA2230 is the cats meow.

The .458 Win Mag is no longer the only game in town as regards large bore/medium large bore rifles.
When Kynoch discontinued making ammo the only calibers available were .458 Win Mag, .404 Jeffrey and .375 H&H as working calibers at any kind of reasonable price.
We now have very good quality factory ammo and components in a wide variety of calibers so the .458 Win Mag is fading a bit.
It is very difficult to get the .458 Win Mag with a 500 grn bullet to break 2,000 fps without compacting the charge which causes problems when it has been heat soaked for months riding around in the back of a 4x4, it might be a squib load or over pressure which would lock up the rifle.
Neither situation is conductive to good health in an emergency.
Fresh ammo seems to work OK but people got tired of taking a chance and when the new ammo in old calibers or newer calibers (specifically the .470 and .458 Lott) became available the .458 Win Mag began to fade a bit.
Hornady is supposed to be releasing a new load in .458 Win Mag (500 grn bullet) that will stay at pressure under extreme conditions...if they can do this it may help breath new life into the caliber.
I had a chance to talk to Finn Agaard many, many years ago , who told me he kept his ammo fresh and rotated it fairly often, sometimes taking the rounds apart and breaking up the compacted powder and then re-assembling it.
Even then he had a few close calls.
