A scope's windage knobs are marked "left" and "right" and the elevation knob is marked "up" and "down".  So when you turn the windage knob in the direction that the knob indicates is "left".....what do you think you are adjusting to the left?

There are two camps on this one.

Some scopes are designed and labeled to indicate that the reticle will be moving to the left.  But others are designed and labeled to indicate that the bullet impact will be moving to the left.  So if you turn in the direction indicated as left and your reticle went to the right, your scope is labeled to move bullet impact.

This can be very confusing and depending on which way you were thinking, it could make you think that something is wrong with your scope.

I have run into that also, and you are right, it can get confusing.

I like scopes that are marked for bullet impact. Less confusing.

Most are clearly marked.  There is no set list of who does what because many manufacturers source from several different countries.
