Hey All,

I am in the market for upgrading my scope on my 30-06. I have settled on a Leupold VX-III and have been looking at the different recticles available. I noticed that the Boone & Crocket recticle is about $60-$80 more expensive. I have always been just a fine duplex guy, so I am wondering how much difference I will see using a B&C recticle.

Thanks

Hello!

Welcome to The OT.

I think it would depend on YOU. If your hunting consists of long shots and you need a reticle for hold over, then yes, the B&C reticle is for you.

On the other hand, if your hunting is limited to short range, like me, (50-100 yards), then I wouldn't think the B&C reticle would be worth the extra $$$.

It does depend on how you hunt the B&C reticle only works for known hold over at the maximum power of the scope. I tend to shoot most of my deer at 200 yds so for me it would work and give known hold over out much farther.

It is one of the least cluttered holdover setups. But a 30-06 ? Assume you're hunting deer and up?
You have a 350 yard point blank range on a 12" vital area so it may just add confusion in the heat of battle.
Remember almost all misses are "over the back" because the dude thinks 200 is 400.
I sight in 3" high at 100 and shoot at 200 and 300 as well (also reveals minute scope cants). Any center mass hold on a deer sized critter will get the heart or lungs out to 375 with my 165 gr handloads (albeit in a 28" bbl highwall that approaches 30 wsm velocity in a 22" rifle.) You can buy a lot of reloading components for that extra $80 to practice with.

Read this post again, paying particular attention to the last sentence. That is where to spend that 80 bucks, assuming you are on a budget.
