I've decided on the Nikon 50mm Angled Fieldscope but I'm thinking of getting

the 13-40 instead of the 13-30.

Would 40x be over kill for this scope?

It would not be too much for looking at targets at the range, but if you want to see game in the wild...

at 40x the shakes and the vibration will be very visible. You better have a very stable tripod for that scope - and if you are to lug a 10 pound tripod, why have a small scope?

Also, at 40x the image will be dim. After all, 40x50 translates into an exit pupil of 1.2 mm.

I would get a 20x or 30x wide angle.

as far as zooms, 13-30x is plenty enough for that scope and any kind of use.

I have a 'junk department store' 50mm f12 Tasco that someone gave me, and after lots of shimming, blackening, adjusting the air space on the objective, and using my astronomy eyepieces from my other scope, I've been able to see the shadows from Jupiter's moons as they move across the planet, bands on Jupiter, etc., at 120x. It's a lower contrast view as the objective doesn't appear to be fully coated, but the resolution is better than I expected to get out of it.

If the scope is capable then 40x will be useful for higher magnification viewing.

50mm and 40x is not big enough.

Sometimes I feel that 100mm is small to my 25x
