Chris,

Had an idea here, many places do the "NRA Round-up" why not do a "Support a Soldier" round up and ask people if they'd like to make a donation (either rounding up to nearest dollar, or nearest 5 or 10 dollar increment....i.e. $215.95 order rounded to $220 would be $4.05) to keep this type of thing going....I don't have a lot of time to send things to you....but I'd put in some cash....and I think a lot of people would be willing to as well....only thing better would be "Send a Soldier a SS Scope" campaign.

Very interesting.  I don't know very much about M118SB.  What are the differences (beside your stated fact that it's not quite as accurate past 600m) between this round and M118LR?  Was "field performance" satisfactory (I don't know how to tactfully ask that question; if I'm crossing the line please accept my apologies in advance)?

Thanks!

Hey Guys!!

I ended up back at the FOB early-for a REALLY good reason-we needed to get more ammo for our crew-served weapons. Anyway, I am shooting exclusively M118LR in my M24 and M118SB in the M21. The Leupold Mk3 turrets are set up for these rounds on the respective weapons. When I was in the Corps, our sniper ammo was the old "LC Match"-stamped ammo which I recall fired a 173gr stepped boattail projectile at 2650fps. I am pleased with both the accuracy and terminal ballistics of both the SB and the LR ammo. The USMC S&B optic, I have no clue on but if it is as good as the Unertl it is intended to replace it will be a winner. I get about a .5 MOA elevation change per 20 degrees F change in temperature with the M24/M118LR ammo. (Hotter temp equals flatter trajectory, obviously). The turrets on the Leupold appear to be calibrated at something like 60 degrees F according to my Horus ballistic program, but I would consult Leupold for a confirmation on that. I am using the 5.11 watch with the Horus program as a backup-good piece of gear except that the analog hands get in the way of the firing solution digital readouts. Again, your support is appreciated!! Send me some more questions!! How about a "Send a Sniper Some New ROEs That Will Let Him Do His Job" campaign! Oh, if we could only control that, right guys!!

Thanks for the intel dump, Chris. Glad you made it back safely!!

I'm standing by for Mom's peanut butter cookies to send, and then your box goes out to you.

I'm interested in what type, if any shotguns you guys utilize for CQB operations.

I'm hearing the Marines are using Mossberg 590A1's, but I'm not sure what the Army uses.

I was at a shooting competition in 1996 and I spoke to an Olin rep there who told me they had recently developed the LR load for the military in conjunction with the AMU who averaged 13 inch groups at 1000 yds vs 20 inch groups with SB.  It was said M852 ran pretty accurate in the M21 but we never got our hands on any, I did see a bunch of it sold on the CMP website a couple years back and I'm wondering if it's even in use anywhere, all I've seen lately is SB and LR?

Hello From Tall Afar!

I am going to do some "technical hunting" next week down south so I drew an additional M107 from our local ODA Team. It has a Leupold 4-14x50 optic with 30mm tube mounted. I have not seen turrets like the ones mounted on it-they are not M1 or M3 and appear to be some type of "target" turret with 1/4 MOA clicks and 15 MOA per revolution. They have metal screw-on caps that cover the turrets (that will be tough not to loose in the field). The scope also has a USMC "football" mil-dot reticle-YES!! I am taking the weapon to the range tonight to see how the turrets work in the dark. Anybody used one of these before? Also, we don't have shotguns, although they would be great for the 1-man in a CQB stack for clearing the "mud huts" we typically work with here. We used them in our work-up for door breaching but the doors over here are usually just thin tin sheets. If we need to get past something heavier, we'll just have the engineer blow it-more fun anyway! The shotguns we used were REM 870's with short barrels and pistol grips. I have seen some Mossbergs in the chow hall carried by MPs. Take Care!!

Hello Guys,

Back on the FOB after a long, hot 7 days and nights in the boonies laying on an optic. Attached a pic of my M107 configured for night ops. It has a new Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5x14x50 and a PVS22. The last night was 40% illum and I could easily see dismount targets at 1.5K with the 22. Had a great time-wish you were here to enjoy!

Sorry for just the "hey", you know how the internet is over here. I am at Adder, south of you. I too am a DM, but I volunteered for this deployment, my second, and am deployed with an FA unit. We aren't doing an FA mission, or I wouldn't have come. The problem is they don't have any m-14s or m-24s, the best they did was a flat top A-3 with rails and retractible butt. I had to supply my own bi-pod and almost had to get my own scope! I had my supply sgt back home send me the leupold i have now, the ACOG they gave me just didn't cut it. He couldn't get the commander to spare my M-14. I don't have the range you guys have with the 7.62 but the 77grainers work pretty darn good. I have engaged from 35 meters out to a little over 400. The 35m was a grenade on two guys attempting to jump on a truck we were escorting during an ambush. We are mounted and I hate driving around trying not to get blown the h#*@ up!  We get alot of action though, not as much as when I was kicking in doors but about every week.

Chris,

First Off Semper FI M.A.C. (Marine Amphibious Corps)

Second, I am a police officer working on research for my department in regards to optics.  My department currently does not allow magnafied optics like Acog.  What they do authorize is red dot / holographic style optics, for the quick aquisition and because they dont believe that they can be confused with Sniper Scopes. My department does not want citizens or defense lawyers making the arguement that Officers have sniper scopes, so why not shoot the gun out of his hand verse putting a lead shot in his brain housing group.

I want to get the Acog sights approved for duty carry, and have to present a proposal on why they would be beneficial to the department.  Now I know Acog has optics that incorporate the magnafied scopes with BAC, and the docter red dot optics mounted on top.  Where can I find litterature or statistics that will help me explain the usefullness of having the Acog with the red dot docter optics, for my proposal.

Now for some background on the terrain my city incorporates so you can maybe tell me if I am on the right track with looking at the Acog.  We are a small city, but have an aboundance of open terrain, ie parkin lots, some of which can span over 300 yards in width with highrise buildings and multiple level parking garages adjacent.  As a once active infantry Marine, i see the problem with the high ground and no cover, with greater distances to cover in shooting if the situation arises.  As far as residential make up, we mostly have Apartments, with very few homes.  95% of our residence live in apartments, some which are highrises.   I personally feel there is a need to have an optic that is magnafied to a degree to increase the threat elimination and acuracy odds of taking longer range shots, but due to the residential make up that my city has with all the apartments and closed hallways I also see the need for the red dot type sights.  Which is why I am geared more toward the Acog optice that incorporates the Docter Red dot optic.  I feel that we achieve the best of both worlds in being more accurate with how we engage our threats and keep the public safe. My city is also building an international sporting stadium which is adjacent to the City Admin building, where a large number of crowds will be expected not only for the sports but the concerts and other events that are sure to be held there.    My department is also gearing up and starting a SWAT team, which is still in the planning stages, and I certainly want to be able to find the right optics that are going to work full spectrum with our goals, either on patrol or for the SWAT team.

Any input you have I would greatly appreciate.  I am planning to present the proposal in a power point presentation so if there are any videos of comparison shooting dealing with either the Acog's and Eotechs I would love that info as well.

Also anyone else reading this if you can offer stats or provide me with research tips I would greatly appreciate that as well.
