I just found out that you can verify a IR light source is working by using your smart phone. I needed to verify a Surefire Light was working in IR mode and Surefire let me know that if you use your smart Phone camera in Face Forward mode (or Selfie Setting) that you can see the IR illumination. The angle has to be just right but you can see it. Here is a photo I took with my iPhone 6 and a Surefire light with the IR filter on it.

You can also look into the light (at an angle) and see a red illumination, not bright but present. Good ones throw less visible, but none I have used had no visible light.

I have never seen one that had "no visible light", either.
