If you've shot the big guys: S&B, USO, Nightforce, Zeiss Diavari: where does IOR fall in terms of optical clarity and adjustment quality?

I am about to drop the hammer on an IOR and want to be sure I am playing in the right league.  Keep in mind, I am not a huge Leupold fan and could get a Mk 4 but am under the impression the IOR glass is better.

I laid a 6x42 IOR next to my Leupold 10x M3 mark 4 and I was amazed what a nice scope the IOR was for a thousand dollars less.  I think you are going to be just fine. If I was spending cash though I would really like a U.S. Optics scope but I'm trading my 10x in on either and IOR 3-18x42 FFP or a new 6.5-20 Leu Mk4 M1 which ever SWFA can find for me.  As for me I really do like Leupold and the other top end scopes are eaven better. I am coming aroung toward liking Nightforce the 56mm objective just seems like too much. The Zeiss scopes are awesome glass, The S&B is supposed to be the best in the USMC tests, Kahles as Swarovski are supposed to be the best glass. Thing is that more factors than just the quality of glass come into play. The power range of the IOR is the most flexable out there 3-18 is certainly better than 4-16 and most FFP scopes are 3.5-10 or so not higher powers. If  you can buy the U.S. optics scope instead I probably would buy it 3.7-22 SN3 rocks for a 300 win mag.

Not a Zeiss,S&B,USO but better that the NF IMO. If your budget permits and you can get a good price on a SN3 then go with that.

I don't think you'd be at all disappointed with IOR.  As T-dad said, it isn't quite up to the same level as Zeiss & S&B (but not too far behind), and I'll have take his word for it on USO.  I disagree somewhat with regards to NF.  Since you're a NF fan as I am, I think that's the best basis of comparison.  I think IOR is better optically in some respects than NF, except I think my 2 NF scopes may be just a tad better resolution-wise in the center of the sweet spot than my IOR, though the IOR has a larger sweet spot with better sharpness out to the edge of the field and better light transmission.  It's worth noting that my IOR is a 30mm 4-14X50 tac, not one of the 35mm models, which reportedly has a little better glass than the 30mm versions.  I like the NF turrets better than the IOR because of better markings, and I don't care for the jinky way IOR uses to zero the turrets.  As for adjustment feel, they're pretty much equivalent, with the same positive clicks.  They both seem to track with equal precision.  The illumination on both could use some improvement, for different reasons.  IOR has the fast focus eyepiece and NF of course has the dreaded rotating eyepiece.  As for reticles, nobody can beat NF for overall reticle selection, but the IOR MP8 is a fantastic reticle that I know you'll love.  Both scopes appear to be equally rugged.  NF has more attractive external appearance IMO.  I like NF's side focus better than IOR in terms of precision feel.  Because of IOR's wider FOV, slightly "brighter" image, and MP8 reticle, I'd give it a slight edge over NF in terms of view.

So, with all th praise on IOR, am I correct in understanding that SWFA does not have the 3-18 in stock?

You're welcome.  I do love that scope, just wanted to let you know about it's quirks. The MP8 reticle is way cool, the glass is better than Leupold's Vari-x III, the tracking is just plain perfect. I didn't find the turret zeroing procedure difficult at all, and you can feel that it will stay where you set it. I say that, however, without the experience of those who also have other top-shelf scopes to compare them to.

Scopes come and go out of there at an alarming rate, however the day I was there, out of literally thousands of scopes stacked about 12 ft high on fiflty yards of steel shelving units,  when I asked the guy at the counter he came back with a very short list of IOR tacticals that were in stock, all most all of which were high power variables none lower than 6x on the low end. Stock was much better on many other brands, there were pallets of Nikons and I asked if those were the new ones and was told the new ones were expected at the end of the week. The sheer number of samplelist used scopes there is staggering there is a huge investment in the used inventory and once something has been there too long it goes on E-bay. One whole wall was large boxes of rings, bases and accessories. The inventory is enormous but right now with the war effort anything tactical that is really sweet is in short supply. There were only about 6 or 8 of the Comp M4s and I really should have picked up another one of them I love the one I have.  Seemed to be a good supply of Leupolds in stock, and I fell in love with a Trijicon Accupoint .125-4  - very high on my must have list.

I completely understand and appreciate their position.  Of course, Murphy's Law stipulates that, on any given day, the one thing you want is the one thing no one has or can get.

I have been called and told that my IOR SH in en route now and should arrive imanently.  I'll give a rundown when it comes it.

And I had decided (before the confirmation email) to drop the $$ on another SN3 - US Optics has never disappointed me (except for the 14+ week turn-around in getting a scope.)

I look forward to the IOR and deciding whether it meets, exceeds, or fails.  If I don't love it, it might be for sale soon and I might be on that 14+ week wait. In which case I might be in the market for a cheap 30mm to ride the 300WM till the USO gets here.

Regardless of how it turns out, I will post soon on what I think of the IOR scope.

Thanx for all the assistance.

I have a 10x SS on my 300 WM pending finding the right high dollar optic or winning lottery ticket.  I will be anxious to hear your review, Koshkin has one on the way also so we should get a lot of info on them.

Has anyone yet tested the IOR SH (3-18)?  I see Pictures of the thing mounted but have yet to see a thorough review of the thing.  Koshkin, you still on it?
