I put an IOR 6x30 scope on an MIA using a ARMS mount.  My problem is the only way to mount scope was to attach both rings forward of the turrets.  This makes the scope to appear uneven as most of the scope is hanging to the back . To me it looks like a soviet 91/30 snipe scope.  The eye relief seems fine  .I have yet to test fire it.

My question is  ... does anyone know what I am talking about /  does anyone else have this setup on the same rifle?

I think this set up will work it just seems peculiar to me. Maybe its because the scope doesnt have a bell housing in the front.

Please experts some help here.

While it will work it is certainly not ideal.

The base I have made by Springfield Armory is 6 & 1/8 inches long. The 35mm tube of this scope doesn't have much room behind the turrets to adjust where you mount the rear most ring, but I would think it would be enough.  Is the problem that you are experiencing caused by the scope not coming back far enough for proper eye relief if the rings are placed front and back of the turrets at the rear most position on the base?

I hate to say this but the M1a is not an easy gun to scope because the cheekweld is so far off. McMillan makes a stock that corrects this and it is found on the M25 version.  Also a good gunsmith can install the type of base that is on the M-25 version which is lower profile than the type used on the M21 version.

If you are truely not able to get a ring to the rear you may want to buy a second set of the same rings and put all four in front to make it even more solid. I know that might look a little strange but I have seen Encore pistols with two rings on the the front & one to the rear.

If I put one ring behind the turrets , which moves the scope forward on th rifle ,then the rear ocular of the scope hits the iron sights (which makes mounting impossible)   .

The eye releif is fine the way I have it but it seems scope is not supported evenly

I think I need slightly higher rings (these are ior 35mm rings) but this would make cheek weld more difficult

Thanks for your help, any one else have this expeirience?

I think you are right the solution is higher rings.  The cheekweld is truely a problem with the M1a. The best solution is The McMillan stock that is used on the M-25. There are several accessory cheekpieces out there but to date I have not found one that I liked.  I saw one M14 that was in Army use that had the stock built up with materials duck taped to the stock - not ideal  not pretty but functional,  I'm just not willing to go that route so I will eventually change the stock.

I tried the 6x IOR on my M1A and had the exact same problems you have. Rather than spending a lot of money tricking up the mount I put the money into a Leupy Mk4 3-9x36 MRT w m3 bdc. It came with 556 dials but for $35 leupold sent me the 762 dials. Put it in nightforce .885 rings and it mounted fine. That scope sits low enough to work ok with the factory stock. This is not an ideal set up for really long range work, but works well for me out to 5-600 meters. Hope this helps.

thanks for the help,

I figured if it happened to me ,someone else already did it before.

So if this scope wont go on this rifle should I try putting it on an FAL ?  Or can I change the bdc ring to .223 / and put it on an ar?

Hey Shaggydog!

i was cruising through the forum and saw your question...

i am by no means an expert, but i had a similiar problem with the 6x30 on my M1A...i just got it figured out this weekend...

i eventually mounted the optic like you mentioned--with both rings "forward" of the turrets...i used a blackhawk adjustable cheek rest, and everything seems to be working just fine...eye relief is much better, shooting is more comfortable, and i just need to "mark" the pad where i want my cheek weld to be...i dinged myself once or twice when i didnt have my glasses on, and i found that if i reminded myself to watch the eye relief, there were no issues...

i was pretty disheartened initially when traditional methods of mounting the scope where not working nor comfortable...i think that i have it figured out now

hopefully that helps...

BP

The SAGE stock is another option for M1a and has a mount attachment that fits on the stripper clip insert.

In truth most of them are 2moa rifles and the ones with lots of work are 1moa rifles according to George at GAPrecision and his bolt guns are legendary. He was building some M1a rifles for USMC when I was down there last week. One problem is that taking the reciever out of  a glass bedded stock over and over to clean it eventually degraded the glass bedding, not a problem with AR-10.

i think that a lot of people "expect" the M1A to be a great shooter right out of the box...

as most know, it was originally a battle rifle, only later modified for accuracy...i like the 6x30 to help me hit stuff that my failing eyeballs cannot see but the rifle can hit

do you run you aimpoint on the forward mount, or on a mount that sits on the receiver?

do you have any problems with the height of the optic?
