Guys,

I have decided to get a scope for my AR for target shooting, and perhaps some varmint hunting. I hope to work my way out to 500 yards or so in time. I have read a lot of information on this and other forums, and the more I read the more confused I get. Here are the parameters for what I would like:

-This scope will be shot primarily on a 5.56 AR, although there is a chance I could upgrade to 6.8 in the future. If I ever decide to get any bigger and harder recoiling than that for longer distances I would get an entirely new scope.

-This scope will never be used for duty work or self defense, and I already have an Aimpoint for shorter range shooting. Again, the goal is target and possibly varmint shooting. An extra fifteen minutes of shooting at dawn and dusk is not something I want to pay a premium for.

-I am looking for the best 'bang' for my buck in terms of quality. The vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 looks appealing, but the Bushnell 4200 Elite 3-9x40 is only a little more money. Does the 'quality' of the glass outweigh the extra magnification for what I am doing?

I am willing to pay what it takes to get what I need, but don't want to spend a whole lot extra for a scope that will survive three tours in Afghanistan when mine will not be treated that harshly or relied upon in the same way.

For my purposes, what would you guys do? Is sticking with a vortex or 4200 in the $200-$250 range a good idea, or do you think it would really be worth my while to pay more now and 'cry once'?

Thanks very much for your help

Welcome

Not to add any additional confusion but the Nikon Team Primos sounds like a good fit for what you have in mind.

The Vortex is a good scope. I have that exact scope on a .308

I hunt with a guy using the 3-9  4200 and it's as clear as the vortex and adds the rainguard making it more practical for hunting in poor weather.

Side by side, the Vortex has a better/wider  field of view at the same magnification as the Bushnell and it's pretty much even on the glass quality. I could get by with either scope and be happy.

You've done your homework and would be happy with either of the 2 you like. I added the Nikon as it has the BDC and that seems like something you might have a use for with your intended use of the rifle.

Those 3 are about as good as you can do in your price range and are plenty enough scope to handle what you have in mind.

Thanks for the reply. I am really narrowing things down now, and just have a few final questions.

1. Is the Diamondback high enough quality glass to take advantage of the 12x, or would it be unclear at the highest magnification level? If all else is fairly equal, I think I'd go for the 4-12 rather than the 3-9 at a fairly equal price point given that I already have an Aimpoint for close in.

2. What is the difference between the Bushnell 3200 and 4200 series beyond the amount of light transmission rate? Is the transmission rate important for anything beyond low light shooting?

3. What are you getting in the Viper to justify it being twice the price of the Diamondback?

Thanks again

The Diamondback is still pretty clear at 12x, it's less clear than 9x, but it's still clear enough to see the holes in a shoot-n-see at 100 yards.

With the Viper you get better glass, and more internal adjustment. "not a huge benefit in glass, but a marginal increase" Ilya would be a lot better at explaining that than I am.

Light transmission makes the most difference in low light, but also helps out at all times for a clearer picture. If you're thinking of getting the 3200 with a higher top end magnification than the 4200, you might rethink it, you want good glass over higher top end.

Sounds like the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 is the way for me to go. Thanks very much for the help.
