Hey guy's I'm in need of some help. I just got done building a 6.8spc on a 16" AR-15 platform and was wondering what would be a good choice in optics for it. Right now I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 with a BDC. Do ya'll think this is a good choice or should go with something else? If so I'm all for some suggestions in the $300 to $400 range. I built the gun for hunting between 100 to 400 yrds.

Thanks,
Guns

Weaver Grand Slam or V-16; a Nikon Monarch in 4-16X for a few $ more.

Mil-dot scopes are not made for any caliber in particular. A "mil" is an angular unit measure. If hunting hogs or deer in low light this scope looks very interesting especially for that platform.

I would get a good quality low powered variable... something in the 1-4X24 class.  You don't need a high magnification scope for that cartridge at your shot distances, and having a true 1X on the low end will give you a massive FOV for fast, "both eyes open" shooting.  Pick a fast reticle that's easy to acquire.  4X on the top end is plenty for most shots within your stated range.

The only time I would go for a high magnification scope on an AR is if it is a heavy barrel rifle intended solely for target shooting.

Thanks guys for the tips your giving me. If I change out the scope I have now for a 1-4x24 or one it that kind of range would my Nikon work out ok for a AR-15 18"/SPR build that I'm working on right now? Or should I just use it for a bolt gun in the near future?

Thanks,
Guns

I wouldn't personally put any 4.5-14X50 scope on an 18" SPR.  To my way of thinking, the big bulky scope combined with 4.5X on the lowest setting kinda destroys the whole intent of that gun, which is rapid engagement.  If you were scoping a heavy barreled AR in something better suited for long range work like, say 6.5 Creedmoor, then I could see putting a high magnification scope on top.  It's not that the 4.5-14X scope wouldn't work fine on your 6.8, I just don't think it's an optimal choice.  In general, I think too many people have a tendency to over scope their rifles, placing too much importance on magnification at the expense of field of view.  A short barreled AR begs for an optic with wide field of view for rapid target acquisition.  I'm not a huge fan of the Buckmasters series Nikons in general, although they are decent scopes.  I would use the 4.5-14X on a bolt gun, as you mentioned.

Well this is the one I went with for my 6.8SPC AR.

Problem is, IT DOESN'T DO ME ANY GOOD IF IT ISN'T IN STOCK. Still waiting for it. Been about a month now.

But if and when it comes in, I'm sure it will work perfect for the 6.8SPC and my needs...

what are your plans for the gun?
what kind of use?

I have tried a bunch of different optics on my 6.8s over the last few years

Check out a 3-9x variable.  I have a bushnell 4200 3-9x on my 6.8.  Makes for a very versatile gun.
