I am looking at an old rifle scope that was my grampa's. No idea the make or magnification. There are no markings. When zoomed in to full magnification I am seeing some image distortion around the perimeter. Everything is in focus at the center. Just around the edges there is some distortion and it looks like something is miss-aligned cause you can see a red-green-blue ghosting. Kind of like when the old tube tv was out of whack.

Anyone know the cause of this and is it fixable?

Can you post a picture. Most scope makers are proud enough to put their name on it somewhere. Is this a fixed power or a variable? 3/4 " or 1 " tube. We will need something to work with. First shot with nothing else to work with is that the internal lenses are dirty. Very old scopes were not sealed so humidity would get in and over years a haze or film will build up. It can be cleaned by a knowledgeable person. Care is essential to keep from further damaging the scope. If you are wanting a good scope to use the money would be better used being put into a new scope. Newer scopes are light years ahead in technology, Coatings, Lenses, seals and reticle design.  With more information someone here is bound to be able to identify your optic. Welcome to the OT.

So it is a variable power scope? Can you tell if there are still any coatings left on the lenses? Without having any idea what make and year it is, it is hard to determine if the model/ brand may have had those issues even when it was new. If you can get a pic to one of us to post it we may be able to help ID it.
