First, let me say you guys are awesome.  I've learn a LOT reading the posts here a Opticstalk.

I mentioned in a previous post I'm looking to put a new scope on an X-Bolt .270 for mostly whitetail hunting in TX... Shots possibly out to 350yds.  I've become a believer in the "buy the best optics you can afford" philosophy.  I'm upgrading from a 14 year old, pre-Monarch Nikon 3-9x40 which I have really enjoyed.

So I've narrowed down my choice to a few items on Samplelist.  I'd love to hear your input to guide my final selection.  I don't really want to spend $1500 but I could be convinced.

Swarovski Z6 1.7-10x42 $1499

Swarovski PH 2.5-10x42 $1299

Swarovski AV 3-10x42 $799

Swarovski PH 3-12x50 $1299

Swarovski AV 4-12x50 $859

Zeiss Varipoint VM/V 2.5-10x50   $1499

Feel free to toss in any other option I may have overlooked.

All the scopes you've listed are top shelf and expensive. I have a Swaro PH 2.5-10x42 and like it OK, I have it mounted on a Kimber Montana 30 06. After reading member opinions why don't you also call Chris or Chris II at SWFA and ask for advice and then make up your mind.

That's a good idea.  Since I live in the Dallas area I may just go down to see them in person.

I bought a 1.7-10x42 Z6 from the sample list, it looks brand new and it is a very, very nice scope.  None of the scopes you listed are bad...I don't see any way you can go wrong.

The 3-10 is about perfect for Texas hunting out to 350: gives you nice low-light, is smaller so it doesn't look like the Hubble mounted on your smaller rifle, and has great resolution and clarity.

Any of the scopes listed would work well, stay on the smaller end of things to keep the scopes from throwing off the rifle's balance.

Just a person observation, if all those are in the "list", I would throw out the AV's.  But, just my line of thinking.

Just got the Swaro Z6 1.7-10 in the mail today.  Can't wait to test it and be able to give good opinion of it.  First impressions.  WOW  Better than any scope I own right now.

Clearly the AV's are the best value in the list.  I'm trying to decide if the others are worth spending 60%- 87% extra.

I thought it would be nice to have the option of going up to 12x but I've never used a 50mm scope.

Anyone care to share why I should stick with the smaller objective OR why I should go with the 50?

I think the 3-10X42 you've listed has the wrong reticle for you:

9186 Swarovski 3-10x42 American 52031, Matte finish, muzzleloading reticle, 1" tube, fast focus eye piece, like new condition $1,054.00 $799.95
what about a Kahles:  I have the non-multizero version and I'm very pleased!

8327 Kahles 3-10x50 Helia CL Multizero 51723, Matte finish, plex reticle, 1" tube, side focus, fast focus eye piece, Allows you to zero your scope at five different ranges, no ring marks, close to new condition. $1,315.00 $749.95

That brings up a good question.  I looks like the muzzleloader reticle is basically a shortened version of the ballistic reticle.  (2 bars instead of 5)

Does anyone know if that's right?

from what I've learned, the glass and coatings are the same on the AV & PHs.  I don't see an advantage in the 30mm or the FFP of the PHs, so I think the AVs are just fine.  LIke I said in my previous post, I have a 50mm Kahles CL and it is an awesome low-light scope.  I have not had the opportunity to compare directly with the AV, but I think they are so close not sure it matters.  I was able to mount the 50 with medium Warne rings and I'm pretty sure I could not have used low with 42mm.  So for me, not a big deal going to the 50mms.

Have several PH 2.5-10x42s.  Like them alot, but not as much as my Kahles CBs and Cs.  Bang for the buck is the Kahles CL on teh Sample List, IMHO.

I have two Swaro AV's which I like very much. I had (but sold) a Kahles CL which was also a winner. No losers there for sure.

Besides the 4X zoom erector of the 30mm Swaros vs. 3X zoom for the AV, the 30mm Swaros all have dual coil springs supporting the erector assy, vs single leaf springs for the AV.  The 30mm Swaros are just more robustly built than the AVs, and can reportedly withstand more punishment.

Heavi, I see you went with the X-bolt. I also went with the X-bolt Stainless in 270WSM. I have a Kahles 3x9x42 mounted on it. I am picking it up today.

Any one of those scopes would be a great choice, just consider your bank a little.

Stein, I think you're right about the bank.  I'm pretty sure I'll go with the Swaro AV 3-10x42. What mounts did you use?  I want to be sure I get it as low as I can.

The only complaint (so far as I have played with it for the last couple days) I have with the Swaro Z6 1.7 to 10 is that if you get the plex reticle, it is really thin.  I like the thicker stuff especially for the low light.  If you were going to get that scope, I would recommend the 4a if available.
