I'm going to buy a pair of binoculars in the near future for hunting and I would like to tap into you guys knowledge bank. What I think I need is a binocular in the 6 or 7 power range. ( I hunt in the east, lots of woods ). I like center focus binoculars and the objective lens should be around 40mm. I'm willing to spend in the neighborhood of $700 to get a GOOD pair maybe more if they are worth the extra cash. I've been watching this site and reading what you guys have to say and I must admit, there seems to be a wealth of knowledge here, that's why I'm asking for your help. Thank you very much.   RRM

Well going to lower power then 8x is going to be difficult.  For some reason the vast majority of optical companies start at about 8x.

Both the Swift Eaglet (very nice glass) at 7x36 and the Leupold Katmai 632 may be options but they have smaller then 40mm objectives.
Three that stand out that might be what you are looking for are:
Docter Optics
Meopta Meostar
Minox BD
My take on them:  Just 2 cents worth Ermm
The Docters I have never handled but have heard good things about most people say they are pretty compairable to a Pentax SP, which I have handled and thats pretty good glass.  Docters are made in Germany (so think Zeiss, Leica) but they are not a popular brand here in the USA.  My concern would be for Warranty and Customer Service (if anything ever went wrong and if Docter does not have CS support here in the US the nocs may have to be shipped to Germany and that can take a long time)
Minox BD .. Never seen in person. I just got to handle their HG (High Grade) series last weekend and I was pretty impressed overall nice binocular.  Minox was under the Leica company for a while and now its a separate deal.  From what I understand and don't quote me but the company is a out of Germany but uses Japan for its glass and assembly. (nothing wrong with that)
Meopta is gaining a pretty strong support in this country, again no idea if they have a USA branch of customer service.  I looked through a pair and thought they were really nice glass..close to the BIG 3 (Zeiss Leica and Swarovski) and a lot less cost.
If it was me and I could swing it I'd lean heavily on the Meopta's the 7x42 should be a very bright binocular for those close quarters woods. Lastly, the other option is to look and find a nice used pair of (Zeiss, Leica Swarovski) all three make 7x42 binoculars but the price is pretty high when brand new.  I will say this last year I took the plunge and bought a pair of Swaro's and I have friends that use Zeiss, and one Leica they really are all top notch.
Let us know what you get and your impressions
Good luck

This is a discontinured model, that is the reason it is so inexpensive.
Canon has very good optics and this one is sharp out to the edges.
Nikon Action Extreme ATB 7x50mm porro prism will give you even more light gathering capability for dawn or dusk situations.
