SWFA SS with fixed 10x is mil spec, but does not have an illuminated recital. I've been looking for a basic fixed power scope like the SS that is mil spec, that offers illuminated recital. The closes I've seen is the  Vortex 2.5-10x44 Viper PST 30mm Rifle Scope but its not mil spec, fixed power, nor does offer parallax adjustments, or first focal plane. For the money spent, SWFA SS is great, just missing the illuminated recital.

What is suggested?

re: Koshkin

Budget is not defined, it would be interesting to know what the base price on up to accomplish this if possible with something like the SWFA SS (mil spec) but with illumination.

If you want an illuminated 10x scope, your options start with the very respectable Hawke Sidewinder 30 Tactical 10x42.

I prefer the SS personally, but Hawke is a very decent scope with illumination and locking turrets.

Generally, there are several higher end 10x tactical scopes like the Leupold Mark 4, IOR Tactical and S&B PMII, but they all lack reticle illumination.

If you insist on illumination, your next logical step is a FFP variable scope that can be set at 10 power.

In order of increasing price, I would look at these:

Vortex PST 2.5-10x32FFP
Weaver Tactical 3-15x50FFP
IOR Tactical 2.5-10x42FFP

As you go up in price there are a lot more options. Since you are talking about SS scopes, I figure that things more expensive than the $1275 IOR are not of too much interest for you.

re:Koshkin
IOR Tactical 2.5-10x42FFP looks nice, but is it mil spec (has it ever been awarded mil contract). Variable power erectors seem more vulnerable and cost added is questionable.  Sidewinder I have not heard of before, who uses it.

What fixed 10x does the army, ect... use for Snipers now a days?

This is the only fixed 10x with illumination I can think of. And it is $1506. But it has very nice adjustments and glass.

How come fixed 10x? Also milspec, how come you feel it has to have had a military contract? Just because the military used it does t make it necessarily better than others.

Army has walked away from using fixed power 10x scope for a variety of good reasons.

As far as milspec goes, I am not sure what that is supposed to mean. Are inquiring about some specific ISO standard?

Either way, unless you are trying to build an exact replica of some weapon system the military uses, I would not worry about it too much.

In my day job US Army is my single largest customer and what they choose for deployment is not necessarily what is best available. Sometimes it is, but that seems to be accidental rather than intentional most of the time.

It has been quite some time since any branch of the US military issued fixed 10X in any serious numbers.

At this moment, I cannot  think of a single scenario where I would prefer a fixed 10X for an actual use rifle - over other options available.  Were I building an M40A1 replica, it'd wear an Unertl for sure; otherwise, there are just too many great options now to bother with a fixed 10.

re: fixed power (eg. 10x) is preferred for several reasons; less vulnerable to failure KISS, dollar value going into other features. Mil spec (Military Specification) is important for durability in some situations, have heard of numerous reports of many scope failures when mounted on semi-auto rifles, the FN FAL is example of this type of situation. SWFA SS was awarded military contract and have heard great reports of how durably it is (one of the few that could be used on FN FAL), though at its price range the glass is not the most expenses.

US Optics is a good one, but your up around $1500 which is huge jump from SWFA SS at $300.

I do some research and possible shopping else where for the time being.
