What are the advantages/disadvantages between Bushnell's illuminated dot vs the firefly?  Also which of the follow is most for the money?

2.5x10.40 firefly 1 inch

2.5x10x50 illuminated dot 30 mm (is this going to be a problem to mount? and is the reticle a cross hair with a red dot centered)

4x16x40 multi-x  (I would think the magnification would be a little over kill.  Would you ever use that much on big game?)

The illuminated dot is Dependant on batteries to illuminate.  The FireFly is Dependant on an outside light source to illuminate.

The illuminated dot is a small dot at the intersection of the crosshairs, this does not cause you pupil to get as small as it would if the whole reticle illuminated like the fire fly does.

The FireFly whole reticle illumination is better for quick shots on dark colored animals in heavy cover even in day light.

You can control the intensity of the dot via its rheostat, the Firefly's intensity is not adjustable.  However you can make it brighter by using a brighter flash light and holding it in the eye piece longer.  Once it has reached it maximum brightness you can not make it dimmer and you have to wait for it to slowly die.

The 30mm tube combined with a 50mm objective would mount with medium rings on most applications.

4-16 is a great "do everything" power range.  Why go with a 3-9 when you can have a 4-16.  The only advantage the 3-9 has is 3x.  The 4-16 has 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14x.  Only reasons I can think of it to save weight or if you truly feel you would never need to go over 9x.  I rarely use over 8x hunting but always use 14x to verify my zero (keeps me from having to walk 100 yards down and 100 yards back several times).

Thanks for the help. Prior to your reply I went with the illuminated dot.  I did not like the thought of being in control of when the reticle was on or not, and the only expert I knew was in agreement.  Went with the Bushnell of the Zeiss because of the deal I got and the rainguard. The 4-16 would have been nice but was not a lit reticle which I wanted.  Thanks for the help.

Good choice.  Did you purchase the scope from us?  If so did our sales staff help you with the mounts?
