I read an article that said illiuminated reticles hurt light transmission 10-15%  Does this sound correct?  I know they are helpful in backlight situations, but what about low light situations?  When I first started looking into them I was thinking the same thing.  That if it is lit in the scope, such as a firefly reticle, then wouldn't your eye somewhat focus/allow that light in and darken the image you are looking at.  Sort of like looking around outside in the dark, you usually see better when everything is dark as opposed to when the porch light is on.  If this is the case then it would seem the smaller the illiuminated part of the reticle is(dot/cross) the more it would be helpful than something like the Firefly which does the entire reticle.  Is this correct and if so then why do people buy illiuminated reticles?.

Illuminated reticle scopes do lose a little light because they use a glass reticle.  They can appear darker because the illuminated part of the reticle causes your pupil to get smaller (same reason you can't see as well with the porch light on).  The solution is just as you have already figured out....illuminate just the intersection of the crosshairs, not the entire crosshair.  The entire reticle illumination sells because it looks cool and has been glamorized in a countless number of movies.

You can easily tell which companies are serious about developing and marketing better scopes by the way they illuminate their reticles.
