are Zeiss and Swarovski revered as being the brightest scopes made??? Zeiss did not build their reputation off of the Conquest... ALL the 1k+ tubes are 30mm.

It only makes sense that you can only funnel so much light down a 1" tube say with a 50mm lens and that you would get MORE light through a 30mm... Like an hourglass effect!

The concept that they are the same baffles me!

The first lenspackage is a collector package the collect the 50mm diamter light down to a 6-10mm package before its sending it back throuigh the scope.

So if you opens a 30 or 34 mm scope you will se that there is a passage smaller than you little finger through it.

THe 1" is still used by all the european makers for their fixed 8x56 and that is the scope that have the best reputation for light.

The europeans always use the 1" for variables with a 3 X magnification,  for example 3-9, 6-18 etc.

The 30 mm is used for the 4X magnification 3-12, 4-16,6-24, 1,5-6 etc

The european makes always say that a 4X converter is to big to be in a 1" tube.

So the tube diameter have nothing to do with light transmission.

Ps. Sorry for my bad enlish, there is surely a number of technical words that is wrongly written, but the explanations behind it is correct.

Regards Håkan

The only REAL advantage for using a 30mm tube is for it's adjustments.

Lots more elevation and windage adjustment options than a 1" tube.

The Euros gained their great reputation for quality scopes due to the quality of glass, and their grinding and refining procedures, coatings. Carl Zeiss's coatings are top shelf.

The 30mm tubes are just a bonus. They don't increase LT in a way you or I could detect.

That's my understanding anywho....

A search will find threads and threads of information on this if you are still baffled. It's been discussed a time or two

30 mm tubes allow the erector sets to mechanically arc through more distance. This allows a variable scope to use a magnification range of 4x instead of 3 as in a 1 inch tube. Thus 3-12 in a 30mm an 3X9 in a 1 inch tube. Some scope makers Bushnell claim a valid 4x erector in 4200 series and the new Redfield (30mm) claim 5X 3x15. A 30mm tube in a fixed power allows more adjustment, (probably in variables also). Scopes do not collect light, it just goes through what surface area is available. The larger the front, the more effort put out to get the same optical quality as smaller thus higher cost.

Dale, as usual is right on the money. The 30mm tube, originally started as the standard to build cause they apparently had trouble getting all those parts in a 1 inch tube. Asfar as brightness, it is the quality of the glass and not thr sive that really matters, all else equal of course. Hope this helps to some money. Look at thr Zeiss Conquest. Swarovski " 1 AV " and the Elite 2.5-10x40. You wiil be amazed of the quality. You will be awazed. I love the B&L/ Bushnell Elites. Theseare in a whole different class fromk the standard Bushnell productes.
