I have a Nosler Custom model 48 in 7mm08 and I want to put a high quality scope on it but I can't decide what to put on it. I have bounced from a Conquest 3.5-10 x 44 to a VX3 3.5-10 to a Z6 1.7-10 to a Kahles 3-9. Price is not really that important, I just want to match the scope to the rifle/caliber. I have a VX3 2.5-8 at the moment but would like a little more power as I enjoy a bit of plinking at the range and find my aging eyes needing a bit more magnification.
Any recommendations would be greatly received.

..............Decisions! Decisions!...For the 7mm-08, 9x or 10x is all you should need on the high end. On that rifle and if price is no issue, go with the Swaro Z6!!.......Go for the gusto!!...However, the 2.5-8 VX3 that you do have, is more than adequate enough for hunting purposes. For paper punching and plinking, you may find that the extra 1x or 2x over the 8x, may not make that much difference.

I`d put your Leupold on first and try it awhile and see if it will fit your needs, before you buy another scope!!Wink

That's a real nice rifle and it deserves good glass. If you are trying to keep the weight down, then I would go the Leupold route, perhaps a VX3 3.5-10x40. Otherwise, and they are really only a couple ounces more, you could go with Zeiss Conquest, Kahles KX or CL's, Swarovski AV in 3-9 or 3-10. Those would be my top choices.

Swaro, Zeiss, or Kahles. Yeah that should cover it. All are very good scopes. I would stay at 12x or below for the calibre, I say 12x because you mention aging eyeballs. Otherwise a 10x will be great as the higher mag.

I had a look thru a conquest 3.5-10 x 44 and was extremely impressed with the view, are the others significantly better such as a Victory or Av Swaro? I was thinking that I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to a 30mm tube if I didn't need to.

........A 30 mm tube increases your adjustment range! That`s it for the most part! I have never used a 30 mm tube and frankly, I don`t need to! Great quality glass can be had in the 1" tubed scopes!

Kahles CL 3-9x42 or 3-10x50
Swarovski Z6 1.7-10x42

I'd be picking between these.

huntfish, any way you go on the scope, that's gonna be one first class rig!  The Nosler Custom rifles are very well made and classy looking!  When you do get the scope, don't forget to post pics!

I like Koshkin's picks.  The only scopes I would add to his recommendations would be the Zeiss VM/V 2.5-10X42 or 2.5-10X50.

Leupold ain't in the same league with these.

I agree with Koshkin, but would add Zeiss Victory to the list.

Agreed, 100%. But some folks are way to anal about weight and think that Leupold is the only company that can build a scope. I just don't happen to be one of them. On the other hand, some would not put a 30mm scope on a lightweight rifle like the Nosler 48. Just trying to be open minded.

If price is not in the mix the 3-10 Kahles CL from the sample list like koshlin recomended. It  is very hard to top this scope. That is the best scope I own though not the most expensive when you get it from SFWA's sample list. Good luck

Love my Conquest 3.5x10 44. Great scope for the money. I would definitely go with Zeiss over Leupold.

All great scopes mentioned above, even the Leupold, though my pick would be the swaro av 3x9.

Well considering the VX2.5-8 is really a 3-9 in disguise if you "want a little more power" that really puts us into the 4-16 or 4.5-14 range and my guess is something in a 40 to a 50 mm objective. Since you have the ability to afford a good scope I will suggest the ones I would consider:

I dont know if you enjoy  having target turrets but the Kahles with the target turrets would probably be my pick because I really like them. I also like having an illuminated reticle as it shows up red against a black target which is helpful. Of these scopes the Z6 of course has the best glass but the glass is so good in the others that they are cert

Thanks everyone I have made some decisions. I am going to stick with a 1" tube so that narrows my choice. I was at a show on the weekend and looked at all the choices to me. It will be a VX3 3.5-10 x 40 or a Kahles CT 3-9x42. The thing that I like about the VX is that I can send it to the CS and put a post and duplex reticle on it and also an elevation target turret which will allow me to shoot to extended ranges when conditions allow, also fun on the range. Will post pics once decided. I know that the glass is not as good but I have thought long and hard and don't believe it will mean the difference between a deer or no deer. I also like the warranty of the leupy so as I write this I guess I am favoring itShocked

If you are truly considering the Kahles, go for it. Don't let the custom shop trappings sway your choice. You have some fine reticule choices (Kahles deserves reticule vs reticle) and while you may not get the same customer service due to distance, etc, likelihood of needing it is much less. And the view is incredible.

I like the post and duplex reticle Leupold offers but pyro6999's right about the glass. The new Swaro ballistic turrets on an AV 3x10-42 look very inviting (1" tube, very light, and excellent glass) but I think it's only offered in a plex retilce right now.
