I finally di dit.  After 40 years of shooting the M1A platform and seeing evrything that then can do, both good and bad, I did it.

The M1A platform is notorious for slam fire and doubling due to trigger control issues.
Promised I'd never let things like that happen to me, so I strip my rifles, reweld the firing pin safety point on the receiver bridge and and cut to minimum clearence, and always keep the chamber clean to prevent out of battery firing.  Seen that happen to others and didn't want it to happen to me.

Went to the range Sunday, mounted a new Sadlak scope mount and IOR rings courtesy of Chris, and set about shooting.  GOt the scope mechanically zero'd, then zero'd the mount to a no wind setting.

Proceeded to shoot 5 consecutive 5 shot sub .7 moa groups, and just wanted to shoot one more.
Reached into the go bag, pulled out another ammo box and loaded 5 into the magazine.
Retract the op rod, listen to the sounds...............Hmmmmmmmmmmmm need to clean that chamber after this string I guess, that sounded alittle mushy.

I'll need to replace the lens's in my glasses, the mount, scope, bolt, op rod, magazine, stock and trigger group.   But other than that no real damage was done.

I had grabbed the ammunition prepped and sized and clearly identified for my M-24.  That mushy sound was the bolt going 9/10ths of the way home, just enough for the firing pin to clear the receiver bridge.

Don't be complacent gentlemen...........it bites hard.

OUCH Mike, I'm happy that you are ok. That's a good lesson for others, I hope this unfortunate accident will serve as a warning for others. Take heed folks.

No real damage done?? Glad to hear you are ok!!! I had one let go using military surplus, blew the bolt completely back thru the receiver, missed my check by fraction of an inch.

Not quite sure what you did wrong...... put the wrong ammo in your gun and the bolt didn't close all the way?  At any rate, glad YOU are ok, guns can be fixed or replaced!
