Nightforce NXS Scope 30mm Tube 12-42x 56mm Side Focus Illuminated CH-3 Reticle Matte

I was talking with a couple long-range shooters in (of all places) Nottingham, England.  They're hired guns to stem the overpopulation of bunnies, and do a lot of precise shooting from long distances.  Sorta like our "dog" hunters out west, I guess.

They've had experience with this Nightforce, and are both dying to have one.

I'm going to plan on using  it as a 25 x 56 at 1,000 yds.  But, every scope I've ever had, I've just cranked it to the highest power and left it there!  This could be interesting.  Maybe I've finally outdone myself!

And the reticle is the plain, clean fine crosshairs that I've been wishing for.

It hurt my credit card to the tune of eighteen and a half, including rings.

Anyone ever use one of these?

Not that particular model NXS, but I have 2 NF scopes, a 3.5-15X50 NXS with mil-dot reticle and an 8-32X56 NXS with NP-R1 reticle.  I love 'em -- they are very well-made with excellent adjustments, optical performance, and reticle options.  I predict you'll be very happy with yours, though you'll be handicapping yourself with very limited FOV and poor light transmission if you leave it on 42X all the time.  I would reserve 42X solely for target shooting or super long range shots at small targets in good light and use the lower to mid powers for everything else.

"I would reserve 42X solely for target shooting or super long range shots at small targets"

I like to find a gnat on the x on the 600 yard x-ring.  Aim small, miss small.

When I get on the 1,000 range, I don't have the foggiest what I will do.  It will take a couple sessions to see what produces the best accuracy.  On that range, the target faces south, so it has good sun.  I'll be traveling up to North Carolina for matches, but I don't know the orientation up there.

I'm 66 and partially disabled, so prone target is all I can do.  The AR-10 bull barrel rifles are too heavy to carry around anyway, so I won't be chasin' hogs with them!

I want this sighted in to take to Camp Perry in August.  It's the 100th annual NRA matches, but my first time.

Good luck with your match at Camp Perry!  You've selected an excellent scope.  My only comment about the 42X setting was centered around the idea of leaving it set on 42X all the time for all shooting.  It's great for shooting paper off a bench and perhaps other super stable shooting positions, but having the scope set at that magnification all the time would be a major PITA for everything else for several reasons.
