I would stay away from anyone who suggests Kahles.....Shocked......just kidding!!

I'm a born again Swarovski fan. They make a pretty good scope as well. Wink

A 7mm mag is able to reach out quite some distance and be of value so one thing I would consider is the reticle. Scopes with a balistic reticle can give a known hold over at distance, however the down side is that most are not in the first focal plane which means that the hold over marks only work at the highest magnification.  Alternatively a FFP first focal plane scope has the advantage that a known hold over mark is always t he same hold over regardless of power the scope is set on.  I would suggest this:
251421 IOR%202.5-10x42%20Tactical%2030mm%20Rifle%20Scope%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20 IOR 2.5-10x42 Tactical 30mm Rifle Scope
  • Matte
  • Illuminated MP-8
  • 30mm
  • First Focal Plane Reticle

and I know it is not a traditional hunting optic but I do not think you would be disappointed. Also worth a look are the new Zeiss reticles and the Kahles multizero, but they still wont do what the IOR does.

A fine rifle needs a fine scope. The Kahles 1.5-6x42 is a good choice: http://www.swfa.com/pc-1449-1175-kahles-15-6x42-helia-c-30mm-riflescope.aspx
My brother has one on a custom 30.06 and it covers all the bases he uses it for. I have the 2.2-9x42C, which is no longer made, on an M700KS 7 mag. It is my best big game rifle scope. Close to it in power is the 2.5-10x50, available on the Samplelist. These are no longer listed either. All of these C models have 30mm tubes and even the 2.5-10x50 doesn't look over bearing because of this.
I like the 7A reticle, several members around here prefer the 4A. Both reticles are heavy and very good in low light.

You did not give a budget.  The 3x9 Nikon Team Primos is a real deal and a great scope if you are on a budget and probably just a little behind the other scopes mentioned.

+1, with the loss of the 4200 Elite 3-9, this scope is the new best buy in a high quality scope @ $216. This scope performs as well as ones costing twice as much.

You know, 216 is a great deal.  If I could get around the wife, I would buy one just to have on hand.

Regardless of the scope choice, that is a great rifle.  Steyr is becoming so hard to find in the US, even secondhand.  Really unfortunate IMO.
