...well, not really, but I just bought one of the ultimate super-cool, large pen!s guns.

I am now the proud owner of a Sako TRG 41 in .338 Lapua!

Now I just have to figue out what scope to put on this bad boy. I bought it from my buddy who had a US Optics on it (another friend now has that, mounted on the "Ultimate" large caliber rifle). I want an indestructible scope on my new baby and I am leaning toward a 6-24x 50 IOR. I believe that US Optics and IOR are really the only two "real" frontline scopes out there right now. I understand that there will be alot of hurt feelings with that statement, but I back it up with the assertion that both IOR and US Optics are military suppliers first and hunting and tactial (SWAT) second. If I was just to bench rest this gun I could get by with some high end German name glass, but I am of the opinion that the "tactical" features I want and the "hunting" durability I need are sometimes mutually exclusive in all but the two brands I have mentioned.

I am planning on very long distance shooting with this setup. I have several other weapons set up for distances closer than 1000M, so this one will be to see how far I can effectively stretch my killzone.

Opinions?

Hey..what a nice piece you got there!!

I have to go along with you as for the U.S. Optics being number one. But I guess you did ask for other options. I've read that a lot of the 50 Cal. guys say that Night Force holds up well for them. They are always coming out with a new reticle to better suit some known cause. You may want to check them out. They might just have, just what you need. I'm assuming you already checked out S&B...if not, check them out too.

Good luck!!

One of my friends owns a very nice night force. The purchase of that scope introduced me to a very skilled professional that I now consider a good friend (the guy I bought my .338 Lapua from). The Nightforce went on top of a Remington Sendero that ended up bedded and recieved nice trigger work. The whole combination resulted in groups that would make any professional shooter proud. I consider the moment that I first looked through the Nightforce the first time I had really experienced great glass! I have also heard that they are more than up to the big magnum/50cal task. The issue now is that I have been informed by people that know a whole lot more about this than I, that Nightforce is having some issues. Quality? Accessability? I don't know, but I do have to be careful since I can't afford a $1500-2000 screwup.

You are right about the S&B. I was actually looking at them (visually fondling internet scope porn is more like it) while you were typing. They are nice scopes, but I think that the IOR is more durable for about a grand less and they are in the same range as US Optics.

Anyone dealt with Nightforce lately?

S&B just won a contract to supply the USMC with PMII's.

The Canadian sniper's are using S&B's too.

I guess they thought they were "tactical" enough.

I love the fact that the Zeiss is specifically calibrated to the .338 That would be a great pairing. I balk at the price though without knowing how frontline tough the scope is. My gun will get used. Desert heat and dust and rough and tough vibrations. I don't want to abuse my gear, but I am thinking real world. My M1A is a hallmark for me, less than .65MOA and does that in extreme heat and cold without losing zero (that one has a Shepard Scope on it).
