Suppose you had a $6-800 budget to buy a scope for a std caliber rifle what would you chose?Rifle is a moa shooter w/ the right loads.Don't care for super large objectives or high rings.Don't see the need for more than 3-9x or2.5-10.Want something bright & clear, which comes down to lens/coatings.Will be used for deer, hogs & bear.Would consider a higher priced item if it was available off the Sample List @ a price within my budget.Would like something superior  to Leupold VX3.

Having not had the opportunity to look through the NEW Vari-X lll's I would rule them out. Something like the 3.5-10 Leupold might be an excellent choice for your needs. Personally, I an very partial to the Elite 2.5-10 which has the RainGuard lens coating and is available with the FireFly reticle. Chris will tell you that the Bushnell 4200 Elites are tough to beat, regardless of the cost. With your budget, your might want to look at the Swarovski AV in 3-10 x 42 with the TDS reticle. From an optical standpoint, it does not get much better than this. As I stated with regards to price, the Bushnell Elite 4200 is an outstanding scope. I own several 4200's and have found no reason not to give these scopes serious consideration before spending several hundred dollars more one of the higher priced Euro scopes. Good luck on your purchase and happy hunting!!!

I don't think you can do better than a Zeiss Conquest in 3-9x40 for $400.00.  I don't know of another scope in this price range that offers so much.

Those three scopes were the first to pop into my head as well, but I get the impression that you want the absolute best you can get...in or around $700.00.  That woud be the following:

Swarovski 3-10x42.....$788.99

Kahles 3-9x42 TDS reticle....$648.99

Honorable mentions:

Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 FireFly....$379.95

Zeiss 3.-9x40 Conquest.....$399.95

Leupold 3.5-10x40 Boone & Crockett.....$519.95

If you can stretch it a tad you can get a Swarovski Professional Hunter off the samplelist like the one below.

2094 Swarovski 2.5-10x42 7a Reticle Click for Picture Professional Hunter series, super light and bright, mounts very low, heavy ring marks $949.95

How about less than 9x magnification?
Kahles 2-7x 36 mm  $498.99

Also, perhaps a high quality fixed ?
Kahles 6x 42 mm $728.99
Schmidt & Bender 6x 42 mm $899.99

And, I have no idea, but since you want something better than a VX-III, I wonder how the Leupold LPS line stacks up in  the $900 range?
Leupold 2.5-10x 45 mm  $894.95
