Hi opticstalk!

I've just got into "real" rifle shooting.  I've plinked with my ar15, and had an m1a, but now I'm getting ready to start handloading for bolt guns.  Particularly, a Stevens 200 project gun which will become a paper puncher, and a TC Venture I want to get ready for hunting.  Both are in 30-06.  I'll probably use the TC Venture for load development as well, so some paper punching will be done with it.

The Stevens has a Viper 6.5-20 Viper, and I'm just waiting to switch out the barrels before dialing it in.  The TC Venture will probably be running the Talley Lightweight rings, but I wasn't sure which scope to go with.  If possible, I'd like to keep the cost below 500.  If I really like what I see, I can probably stretch it to 800 or 900.

As for the scopes requirements, I'll probably be doing some boar hunting in central California or Riverside.  I'll be moving to Washington state eventually, and will probably try deer at some point.

After browsing through some other threads, I saw recommendations for:
Trijicon Accupoint, though unsure of which reticle or magnification power
Zeiss Conquest
Meopta Meopro
Sightron II Big Sky

For just getting setup, am I aiming too high for my scope without actually experiencing the conditions I'll be in?  In other words, would a sub-300 dollar scope suit my needs better to begin with?

What would you recommend?

Welcome to the OT!  I will tell you I have a T/C pro hunter in S&W .460mag .A Premier Illum.Hunter rides on it,I'm very happy with this combo.
Take a look at the new Zeiss Conquest HD5 or the SWARO Z3.I've owned a Z3 in the past, glass is some of the best there is.Haven't seen the HD5 but I have a 5-25x50 due in this week that I purchased from SWFA.

You cant go wrong with a Conquest, and im sure you can find some great deals on used ones. I've got a 4.5-14x42 and really like it. Look into some of the ballistic reticles they come with as well.

You could probably find one used for around 600 dollars.

Welcome squee116. In all honesty, all of the scopes you listed are very good and will get the job done. For low-light shooting, the Trijicon Accupoints are great. I have (and like) the 3-9 X 40 with the green triangle. I also have one Conquest, two Sightron's and three Z-3 Swaros. Love 'em all. Good luck in your rifle pursuits!

It's been my experience that buying something now for something I may do in the future hasn't worked out so well.  I've never hunted boar, so not totally sure what is best optics wise for that.  Will ou be hunting those in daylight or moonlight?  One thing I do know, if you buy quality products, you can't go wrong and they are easy to resell if needs change.

With that said, its hard to go wrong with a Conquest.  We have two 3-9X40s and they are awesome in low-light in regards to deer hunting.

Good luck
