Hello all, I'm looking for a some opinions.  I have a LAR-8 16" rifle that's primarily used for hunting but I also frequent the local 250yd range.  I currently have the GRSC 1-4x CRS and would like a reticle for more precise shots (past 100yds).

My hunting shots will be 20-250yds (hog and deer).  I would like to get out to 500yds at a range in the future.

I am interested in the 3-9x42 mil-dot SWFA SS.  I have a few questions regarding the optic and the switch from my current optic:

  • Is the mil-dot a preferred reticle for hunting?  Is the mil-quad so much better than I will regret the mil-dot purchase (kit 6)?  I am no competition shooter just someone wanting more magnification with a finer reticle than the "dots" I currently own.
  • I am new to hunting with magnified optics.  Is this scope capable of gathering sufficient light for making shots at dawn and dusk?
  • Will I miss not having the illumination I currently have?  Note: I haven't hunted with my GRSC so I may not know what I'm missing when I sell it.
  • Is the 3x magnification and FFP reticle suitable for the close up shots (i.e. 20yds)?  I have shot my 1-4x set at 4x at 50 yards with no problems.  I am unsure for the closer shots.
  • Are the turrets able to handle frequent carrying/stalking without being accidentally adjusted?

Thanks!

Here is a review for that scope, slanted towards the hunter.
If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Hunting scopes tend to have caps covering the knobs to prevent accidental adjustment when stalking through brush. There are pro s and con s of everything.  Tactical knobs allows you to adjust to  correct for trajectory so you can hold on the terget at longer distances. It really depends more on what distance are involved. If I was shooting past 300 yds I would definately want the Super Sniper with its tactical knobs. If I was just hunting the rifle and expecting shots from 50 to 300 yds I might select a Leupold FX3 6x42 with long range duplex or a Zeiss Rapid Z Conquest and use the hold over marks but that is no where near as precise as the tactical knobs of the SS.  I would have no problem using the mil dot for a hunting reticle but I would prefer the mil quad having used both. In low light dial down to 6x to max out the brightness of the scope.

Thanks for the responses.  I am still intrigued by the "kit 6" package and haven't yet talked myself into a different scope based on what I've read.  Anyone use one of the SS 3-9x for hunting in particular?
